87 gmc new guy
I apologize if I'm doing this wrong. My 87 sierra classic seems to have a thermostatic air cleaner. It has no rubberhoses going to it just the metal flap and mechanism and a little orange round thing. Is this something I should worry about? I discovered it while trying to replace vacuum hoses. I've been having trouble with my defroster sending very little hot air to the defrost vents and most of it out of the other vents. I'm also having trouble when accellerating, runs fine then then hits 2nd or 3rd and it falls on its face. Sounds like a spark knocking with the engine really lagging until I hit 30 mph + or -. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you pass along.

Do you still have the stock motor in it? If so it should be TBI. Pictures of what you are describing would be great and very helpful. Welcome to the forum, someone here should be able to help you figure this out.

yup, its the original 350 tbi. It seems like everything I read regarding the thermostatic air cleaners are on carbureted engines. I'll try to get some pics up.

Thanks old rusty! I almost feel guilty getting all this info from you guys. Hopefully down the road I'll be more knowledgeable and able to help the next batch of younger truck owners.

With regards to your defroster issue, does your truck have AC or just a heater only?

it has both a/c and heat. From what I can tell, everything works fine except defrost. I'd like to get get some kind of detailed repair manual that is "1987" specific. I have a Haynes manual but it covers 72' to 87' trucks and it seems like the majority of the info stops at 86'. Everything 87' is an asterisk.
