Truck dies after going into reverse.

So I put my old quadrajet on after I put a new, bigger cam in my engine(350). We couldn't get the timing right with the edelbrock 600 cfm we had in before, so we swapped it out for the quadrajet and now it is in time. However, now whenever I shift into reverse my truck will die... it will idle REALLY low and then just die. Does my carb need to be rebuilt? I tried idling it up some... it didn't seem to help it.

Re: Truck dies after going into reverse.

Idles low, like under 600rpm?

If so, when you shift into reverse you are putting a load on it and that might be the cause of it dying. check timing first then adj your carb settings. also what cam did you put in there?

I'm not sure how many rpms it is getting when it idles lower. But It's LOW.

Also, not sure what the exact specs on the cam are... I can maybe get them, I'll try. Before this cam I had a Crane Cam that was I believe one step above stock. I think this new cam is 2 or 3 steps up from my old one. At first it would just idle really low after shifting into reverse but then it would catch up and it would idle higher and I could go, but now it dies almost every single time I put it into reverse, even if it's going from drive to reverse.

Re: Truck dies after going into reverse.

It sounds like you timing might be off or there is a vacumn leak. I say this because when you shift into Drive or reverse, the trans pulls more vacumn and the engine sees that and bumps the timing a little

Re: Truck dies after going into reverse.

Maybe i missunderstood your problem, but you said "after installing a bigger cam". I assume you have an auto trans. You may need a higher stall torque converter. I rebuilt my 454 and it wouldnt idle in gear. I went to a 2800 stall and it worked great.

Re: Truck dies after going into reverse.

REcurve your dizzy. Less mechanical in the dizzy and more initial timing.
x2 on the convertor.

Re: Truck dies after going into reverse.

sounds like you have too big of a cam for your stock convertor.... Not my truck but I wouldnt install a cam and not know what the specs were.... Also, my experience.. stock q-jets dont work well with big cam. I;m sure they can be tuned to run just fine but I never had good luck.
