A 350 with Vortec heads, 270 cam, and with full bolt-ons with be over 350. Probably around 375 horse. A little rough for DD, but a nice cruiser. If you have the budget for a good roller 400 is easy. 305's can be built for good mpg, and reliability. |

Re: 305 build
The motor is original to the truck which brings more money if I decide to sell the truck later on...I aint really looking for a weekend drag machine if I do that my 350 4 bolt main would be my motor to do so...I just want some decent power for it and 350HP would suit me fine plus I just wanna be different from everyone else

Re: 305 build
Original drivetrain in anything 25+ years old always brings more so it does matter and 1967-72 short beds are rare long beds are getting there and 73-87 same story minus the long bed ones which I can find all day long...I could sell my 72 for 30 grand at ther car show last September if i still had the 307 in it cause that truck was all original till last summer so yea original drivetrain does matter

Re: 305 build
The problem you will have is that anyone who wants a "numbers-matching" vehicle wants it to have all the original components. You won't hit 350hp with those.
If it were me, I would put the 305 in the shed and build a 350+ to hit your HP goal. If you ever do sell the truck, then you can include the original engine in the deal. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 305 build
you would spend thousands of dollars to try and get the power you want and it just not going to happen, to mean matching mean nothing, if it a big deal build you a good 350, and if you sell the truck pull it out and stick the 305 back in. i bulit a 305 for my 71 c-10 worst motor i have had i pulled a 12ft tailer and it had no power to pull it empty put the 350 in it and it would pull it anywhere all day long

I have the original 350 in my 1972 and it don't make it worth squat more than it would with a GM crate engine in it. 30 grand for a rig with a 307? I'm finding that hard to believe. Gary

Re: 305 build
A 305 isn't going to make the power you want for cheap... Period.
My wife's '05 Ford Escape can pull bushes... roots and all. Gary

Re: 305 build
There are ways to build a 305 to make power. But you need to spin it hard and high to make it. You can bore the block if you want... because that's basically all you'll be reusing. All the internals, and heads will need to be aftermarket. Along with the intake and carb.
For what it would cost to build a 400hp 305... you could prolly build a 550hp 350. Or buy a stock 454 and make a ton of TQ... Pulling bushes is not any kind of measure of power. Also... if some cat will give you 30 grand for a truck with a 307 in it... all I can say is that a fool and his money are soon parted. Not to mention... why don't you have the 30 grand or this "new" Camaro? The 307 mean that much to you? Gary

Re: 305 build
GASoline71 the truck means more to me than anything I learned to drive in it at 8 years old learned how to work on motors with this truck and the same place offered my dad the same deal in 1995 or 1996 after he got it to show quality and he said no to it toyea the new camaros are nice but not worth it to me and the 307 is now on a stand with hole in the piston and what I dont get everyone bashes on 307 motors when in fact are great motors if built right ive seen a 307 with 400hp and that thing was stout and my dad and his friend built the 307 on the stand now 25 years ago it was a strong motor and believe it or not pretty fast

Re: 305 build
You're looking at a complete rotating assembly. At a minimum a forged crank and pistons. Aftermarket rods with fasteners that will make it to 7,000 RPM's. Not 100% sure if the 2 bolt block will take the abuse after that much power is put to it on a regular basis. The small bore will need to be bored out as well.
The heads will need to be aftermarket, and ported and polished to make the power. You'll have a couple grand in the heads alone. Full roller valvetrain, which is gonna run another ,1,500 bucks. If you have a roller capable block... then you'll save maybe 500 bucks. I'm telling you all this basically to tell you that you are wasting your time and money. A 305 makes a great daily driver with a mild cam in it with stock heads that have springs to match the cam. If you want to seriously make 400hp with a SBC on the cheap... a 350 or a 400 is what you want. You can make 1 hp per cubic inch with a 350 EZPZ for pretty much the same cost of a normal rebuild. If you factor in headers, carb and manifold, then the price gooes up. But it's doable for waaaayyyyy cheaper than a 305. Because a 350 and a 400 bottom end will hold 400hp with stock cast iron parts, and not need to see the huge RPM's to make the power. 400hp can be made with a 2 bolt block in a 350 as well. Sell the 305 for 200 bucks and use it towars the purchase of a 350. Quote:
