Mild build up for 87 350 questions

Hi, I have a 1987 350 tbi (L05). I want good torque and gas mileage. Right now I have RPC long tube headers that I did not put on yet but am planning on to put them on sometime this weekend. It also has flowmaster 40 series on. I am planning on getting vortec heads and and a good cam but don't know what type of cam to get? So what's a good cam that gives good torque but gets good gas mileage. What other things can i do without breaking the bank or boring out my engine or stroking it? This truck is a daily driving and I will use it to tow a little. What will be the estimated torque and horsepower after I am done?

Headers and vortec heads are going to remove any possibility of having an EGR system any longer without some fabrication. Is your area cool with that when it comes to inspections/emissions ?

Re: Mild build up for 87 350 questions

I have done a similar thread and got lots of good info back. Search "20 mpg hijak thread" and you can read all the good advise they gave me as well. I have had some improvements based on doing some of the recommendations, but I have limited funds and limited skills to have executed all that I have planned to do over time.

One thing that really helped me was a really good tune up. I know that one spark plug I replaced had to have come off the line with the truck.
