Re: wiring harness advice needed !!

i would ask yourself: what are the plans for my build? since these trucks had limited 'circuits' a painless kit is a nice upgrade for a/c, power windows, hei, etc. i wanted a stock look so i bought the standard under dash but had the engine harness pre-wired for hei and 1 wire (aka internally regulated) alternator. i got them from early classic industries in fresno, ca. hope that was helpful and good luck with your build.

Re: wiring harness advice needed !!

Got my M & H from Early Classic Enterprises. Did it on an earlier build. Will do it on the next one.

Re: wiring harness advice needed !!

'Lectric Limited and M&H are both good. I think both will do "upgrades" in the engine compartment like later alternator and HEI. I strongly recommend a factory harness for a basic build. If you go aftermarket Painless style you have to have patience and tools to do it right. You have to be willing to route and protect and find all the right ends to get a good product. By the time you do all that, you are much better off buying one that is done.

the main thing that causes loads of problems with wiring is guys just dont understand the concept of grounding and it's importance to makin things work

I've been told M&H and American Autowire are almost the same. I ordered an AAW and am working with it now and love it. more expensive, yes. But it has all the plugs and sockets and it's going well so far.

I never dealt with AAW so I can't speak for them. I have bought M&H harnesses before and they are US made. The guy who rigs your harness signs it personally. They have the correct lengths, correct GM color codes and wire gauges, and correct Packard style connectors. Even the little plastic [shootin' shell] bullet that fits the hole in the fender skirt just snaps right in. Yes, they ain't cheap.

"Best" is a matter of application and opinion. If you are going the pure restoration route, M&H auto electric is what all of the anal retentive car show guys use. Their insulation, connectors, colors and wire sizes are exactly what the factory used when they built the car BUT you pay for it. A harness from them for a 67, A/C truck will cost over $800.00.

If you go the resto-rod route like I did the Painless performance #10206 (18 circuit harness) is a good choice because it uses modern fuses, not the glass ones and allows for fan relays, electric fuel pump relays, power windows and all the other stuff these trucks never had but are really nice if you drive it much. Also, every wire is very clearly marked with the circuit name imprinted every foot or so on the wire. That's going to set you back about $525.00

There are MUCH fancier ways to wire a truck...I saw one in Anaheim that the builder spent $1700.00 on a computerized panel and a bunch of tech that will probably go bad in a year or two so for me "best" is the painless harness.
