54 Chevy "RusteeNutz"

Hello everyone—First post here. Thought I would add a post on my new project. I don’t know much about these cars, so needless to say, this will be learn as you go project which will take some time. I am reading up as much as I can. I also hope to learn as much as I can from this, and the other build posts as I began this exciting journey.

The Project: 1954 Chevy – I believe it is a “stake bed”. No bed, and has the short running boards. Has a 53 front clip. Not sure what size motor is in there, but it is an inline 6—which runs on top of a three speed.
After removing the old stake bed, here is how it sits.

Plans: Upgrade front and rear suspension and bag it (want it sitting reasonably low). Upgrade to power disc brakes and power steering. Will repair rusted areas as needed, but will most likely leave the body/paint as is, until I reach cross that bridge.

For now, the goal is to work on suspension.

My first question: I’m leaning towards the Fatman’s Hub to Hub Mustang II kit with bags, but what are the options for the rear for bags? Looks like I will also need to replace my rear leaf springs—I think I may still have the originals still on that are ready to retire. Anyone know of where I can get a kit, or how to go about piece mealing one together?

Well, that’s it for now. Next steps are to remove that front clip...

Re: 54 Chevy "RusteeNutz"

While I search for the suspension hardware I will need, I decided on making a floor shifter--seeing as how the hurst type shifter was directly in front of the gas pedal and way too short (not original tranny), I went down to my local HD, picked up a 1x1/4 by 1/4 thick piece of metal and heated it up..bent into shape, then cut and welded the top half of the hurst type shifter to it. Will do for now...

Next up, will be removing some additional rivets and then a deep clean, and will then start fitting the Heidts IFS.
