How often do you shift your rig into four wheel drive?

I read somewhere you should do it at least once a month. And drive it on unpaved ground.

Re: How often do you shift your rig into four wheel drive?

When I got my '72 Blazer with NP205 transfer case, it was very difficult to shift back into 2H. P.O. has likely not shifted it into 4x4 in some time, so it took several cycles to get it to shift relatively easily in and out of 4x4. Depending on which t-case you have, 1/mo should be sufficient.

Yeah, definately avoid driving on hard surfaces with 4x4 engaged as it can lead to axle wind-up making it very difficult to shift out of 4x4 and can cause breakage of axle components.

Engaging 4wd with the hubs unlocked will keep the diff and TC lubed up and operating driving around town once a month, then put in 2wd and lock front hubs to exercise those as well. No need to take off road or drive in actual 4wd. Now that being said, why wouldn't you go offroad once a month anyway. It's too fun not to.

Re: How often do you shift your rig into four wheel drive?

Thanks for your replies. I've had my '71 for nearly a year. The PO showed me how to go throught the process of putting it into FWD, but now, I'm experiencing a problem with the shifter staying in 4W Hi. The shifter pops back into 2W Hi. I appreciate your advice and experience.
