What is this number on my fender?

I removed the passenger side fenders (out and inner) yesterday and found a large "74" on the inside rear of the outer fender. Is that a lot number of some kind?

Re: What is this number on my fender?

Its a build code, if your cab wasn't repainted there would be more on the firewall, possibly the back of the cab.

Re: What is this number on my fender?

General assembly build sequence number. A truncation of a longer number like 317874 (or whatever).

You would also find it on the rear axle diff cover, wheels, rad support, hood, grille, if they were unmolested; anywhere where a component was sub assembled off line and conveyed to the main line in build sequence order.

Not sure about that sequence number since I have the same number. Here is one on the front bulkhead of my bed. The 875 was crossed out and the 874 was written next to it.

Trust me: it's a portion of the GA sequence number.

I totally made that full sequence number up, as an example. It could just as easily be 123474 ( or 000074!). The fact that yours is 874 is just an unfortunate coincidence/ bad example on my part, specific to this thread. Keep in mind we build nine or ten "#74"s every day (and probably one or two "874"s). The point is that it is the last two digits of a longer number, written as a type of shorthand.

It's a good thing they discovered their mistake on your truck and crossed it out; somebody (or several somebodies) were about to have a very bad day.

Check my intro thread linked below (page 5 post 117) and you'll see my truck was number "87". My full GA build sequence number was probably around "19387".

Re: What is this number on my fender?

The only other thing it could be, if it was on the front of dash, would be the paint color. Guys in the paint shop would write the paint code to give the painters a "heads up" of what color was coming.

Since we are talking about a fender (rather than FOD) we know that's not it; plus my truck is code 72 Apple Red as opposed to code 87 (doesn't exist).

Re: What is this number on my fender?

Found this in my files while engaged in another discussion:

The sequence number written on this car would be "93". Perhaps "093" if the operator was feeling a bit frisky.

The PVI (Primary Vehicle Identifier) is used to track the build through body shop and paint until the GA sequence number is established, at which time the GA sequence number becomes supreme.

Notice that the VIN has not even been created at this point.
