Steering column issue

So I retrofitted a late 80's steering column into my truck. The issue I'm having is with my steering wheel and adapter. The column moves fine until I tighten the steering wheel down then it quits turning. I'm thinking the steering wheel adapter from the original 68 column may be too long?

Re: Steering column issue

Is it a truck column and is the lock plate still on it? Tightening it should not affect it unless something is hitting. Does the adapter have a outer cover that may be pressing on the top of the steering column as you tighten it.

Re: Steering column issue

It came out of a full size blazer, that's all I know. It was the body style that had the gear selector in the dash, not on the column. Has key, tilt, and it locks. If I put the wheel on and run the nut up by hand everything turns freely, but the more I tighten the steering wheel nut the harder it gets to turn until it won't turn anymore (the steering wheel). I've tried it with and without the outer cover in it.

Re: Steering column issue

Do you have a picture of the adapter on the column? It sounds like the adapter is going too far down on the shaft and the bottom edge of the adapter may be hitting. Does your adapter have the metal (bell) cover over it?
