My "new" truck came home today!
Today I went to go get my '71. My friend pulled it up onto the trailer with his Oliver Super 77. Getting it unloaded when I got home was a little more challenging, but once it was sitting in my driveway it was all worth it!
Upon looking at the engine closer, I'm not sure it has the original engine. Some previous owner put an HEI distributor on it, and the valve covers are black. It almost looks like a GM crate engine. Does anyone know a good way to tell what year the engine is? The engine is covered in sludge, so finding casting numbers could be difficult.

I thought so too. Plus, I can't complain since it was given to me for free. It needs a little work, besides the engine, but I think it'll be a good rig.

Start by checking the back ledge of the engine block, where it bolts to the tranny, for the engine ID. A newer motor is going to have the "5.0" (305) or a "5.7" (350) embossed on the block. Might need a can of carb cleaner to read it good. I did the same thing years ago. Bought a '70 with a "350-LT1". It was pretty strong, but not quite what youd expect out of a 350-LT1. Started probing around, found that it was a 5.0 with some minor mods.
 One of many lessons learned....

That motor has a long water pump setup on it, so it's is probably a later model version.

Cannot do any better than free. Good luck. These trucks are worth a lot these days. Good find for free, and worth a lot more. I had to sell mine baby back in 2005, and just bought it back last week. It is in horrible condition but at least it is mine again.
