Side AC Vents converted to speaker pod?

Has anyone done this? I can not seem to find any threads using the key words that I am thinking of. Any suggestions on key words, pictures of this being done or information on whether it will work or not would be nice. Seems like it would work to me but I do not have vents in hand to really take measurements and stuff. I am sure that they would be rather small speakers but that would definitely take care of the highs for the stereo and be a good use of the space on my dash. I have a truck in the local yard with the vents still there and I don't have AC in my truck so I though it would work out pretty good. Thanks in advance.

I think you could put a small tweeter or midrange in those. If you have the vents (or pick up a cheap set of repros) that you'd be able to find out what fits. I can measure one, but it won't tell you that much. Lots of depth with the dash hole behind them though.

Subscribing to see what you end up doing... I plan on doing this to my wife's truck when we get around to building her's. I "think" a four inch speaker could be made to work, but some measurements will confirm.

There is more room than I initially thought. Especially behind the duct as pointed out already. Thanks for all the input. I don't think this is going to turn out that bad.

Can someone post a picture of the dash without the vent installed so that I can see how much of the dash needs to be removed? I neglected to get pictures before I left the junkyard. By the way I got the vents for 2 bucks a piece. Not bad in my book.

I did that a while back. I put some 3.5" speakers in there, but behind the vents, so you can't see the speakers from inside, just looks like the stock vents. I'll take some pics and post them if you want.
I basically mounted the speakers to the dash, then shaved the vent balls down so they didn't touch the speaker cones. Put another foam piece on the ball so that it wouldn't move towards the speaker and screwed them into place.

Here's some pics. I used some Pioneer 3.5" speakers I found on CL, and they worked out great. Found that a 4" of the same type would have fit also. I only had to cut part of the plastic housing and the back of the ball to fit the speaker.

Thanks for the pictures. I like how you mounted them. I was thinking of mounting the speakers up into the vent pod itself. Your way is probably easier.

You could only mount tweeters in the fronts because of the size, that's why I went behind it. I like the fact you can't see any speakers in the dash, so it looks kinda stock.

I found some speaker at the right price($5 desk top computer speaker/quality is questionable we'll see) and I have made some progress towards my vision. So here are some pictures of what I am up to.

I thought i was going to trim the ball to act as a speaker grill but I like the way it looks now. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I have trimmed and fit everything to fit and painted to match the color of the interior(eventual color anyways). So here it is. I am still playing around with the idea of trimming the actual a/c vent to replace the speaker grill so that it looks really stock.
