6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

I've been searching all over the forum but couldn't really find an answer to my question so I figured I would ask on here. Has anyone swapped a 4L80E into a single cab 88-98 2wd truck? My friend that is doing the swap has already done a 5.3/4L60E swap into a 93 ECSB for another customer and did not have to do much modification except move the trans cross member back about an inch. I know the 4L60E is close in size to the 4L80E, but will the 4L80E require any trimming of the trans tunnel? The truck was originally a V6 5 speed truck. Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: 6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

hello 67 chevysupercharged. I cant answer that question be easily but I gice you some info. the trans tunnel may require some trimming but the only way to find out, how much of trimming is required is to put your gloves on and get to the lsx swap. the engine/transmission placement starts with where you mount the engine in the engine bay and the engine mounts and the adapter plates used. from what I have seen, lsx swappers all have different engine placement. some lsx swappers like for the engine to placed closer to the fire wall so they get adapter plates that set the further back. some swapper use adapter plates that allows the engine to placed closer to the radiator support. not all adapter plates are the same. also the 4L80E is quite bigger and heavier than the 4L60E. this size issue may affect the placement and trans tunnel trimmimg also. good luck with your lsx swap. Clark.

Re: 6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

Personally, when replacing a SBC with an LS engine, I like to use the Carshop 1" setback plates, placing the bellhousing flange in the same location as the SBC was in. Worked out nice on my truck, was able to retain the original 4 speed and driveshaft, crossmember unmodded.

In your case of putting a 4L80E in there, you may have to do some custom crossmember and driveshaft work since the 4L80E did not come stock in a RCSB truck.

Re: 6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

I appreciate y'alls input. My friend and I are planning on doing test fitting either way, I was just wondering if someone had swapped a 4L80E into a similar truck so that I could get a little more idea of how it will fit. I will try to post results on here once we've done some test fitting. Thank you.

Re: 6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

A 4L80E will fit with no modifications to the body, Remember 454SS trucks got the 4L80E in '91...So even 1/2 ton RCSB frames are drilled for a 4L80E.

Re: 6.0/4L80e 91 Shortbed Swap Question

A lot of these trucks came with 4l80e and TH400.I have never seen a cab variation. No matter what wheel base or cab configuration, motor/trans placement is where it is.With the correct mounts and oil pan it should fit like a glove.
