Gas pedal question

My 67 has an interesting gas pedal, two ball studs at the bottom hold the pedal to the truck, and it slides at the top.

With the new carpet, I can't get the pedal to stay on the balls. I'm wondering if anyone here has adapted a different type of pedal, one that does not rely on a mount at the bottom.

If so, I would be interested in how you did it.

Re: Gas pedal question

Not a ton of help....but you can switch over to a '71-'72 pedal/cable assembly. It takes a little work, but will work.

Thanx, I will try to find some of the other threads, did not think of that. Was hoping for a quick, not replacing the whole thing trick

I don't think there is an easy answer. You might try replacing the ball studs to see if that helps, but that is not always an easy task either. If you don't heat the old ones before trying to remove them they often twist off and have to be drilled out and the holes re-threaded.

Sometimes the carpet is just too bushy around the balls and you have to trim some back.

Thumbs up Re: Gas pedal question

Best money you will spend on a gas pedal assembly.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Gas pedal question

Welded this late '70s early '80s firebird/ trans am unit to the original lever and it works flawlessly. Well it has for 349,000 miles so the test drive continues.

I like that Capt. I was just about to pay 50.00 for the kit, I'm gonna look for a way to duplicate yours before spending the money.

Re: Gas pedal question

I like that solution also captrmw. In my case I would have to check on how to make the old mounts not noticeable with my existing carpet.

Re: Gas pedal question

Finally got around to this. It's a project and just now getting to where I'm driving it. Followed Capt. RMW's lead and bought a used gas pedal on Ebay (8.00, from a 70 Barracuda). I think that's pretty cool in itself.

Well, got it welded, and the test drive is underway

Re: Gas pedal question

save your time and money, take a small box cutter to where the balls are and cut them through

Re: Gas pedal question

Looks good Dave, I am still "road testing" mine after 29 years and 480,000 miles. We are in Deming,N.M. on the last third of an 8500 mile trip.

Later, Capt. Roger

Re: Gas pedal question

Oh man, I just saw this right after I trimmed the bushiness from my balls on my 69 truck and installed the pedal onto the new carpet. I should have been paying attention and done it this better way. Yes that does look very nice, both of you.

Exactly what I did. I have Dynamat Sound Insulation, 1/4 inch sound deadening foam and about 1/2 inch matting under the carpet.

Thanks for the idea! I'm going to look for another pedal next time I'm at the pick-n-pull.

Re: Gas pedal question

I have come across this a few times, I simply remove jute, from the pedal area of the carpet, and problem is solved.
