GMCs with 50th paint

I know (at least I don't think so) that the GMCs were not available with the 1968 50th anniversary package but I think there is a few that were ordered with "special paint" that is the same. Like my suburban..

Curious if anyone else has or seen a 68 gmc with the same special paint my code on the spid is 01001KG SPECIAL PAINT

It has fawn interior like all 50th chevy suburbans had but the metal is white not gold.

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

My guess is that since it wasn't GMC's 50th Anniversary, GMC trucks were not produced in 50th Anniversary Editions. However on a mixed-make production line like Fremont's that's not to say the paint shop didn't get carried away and shoot Gold and White on some Subs intended to become GMCs. Without the badges on they all looked the same. I'm sure Keith will correct us, shortly.
I have a '67 K/10 Sub and a '68 C/10 Stepside from Fremont and they both have Fawn interiors. Fremont had a lot of fawn paint, apparently, and they were not afraid to shoot it on anything that moved.
By the way, very handsome "Jimmy XL".

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

I thought 50th anniv chev interiors were white/gold, not fawn. As I read your post, I was thinking that the exterior paint looks saddle to me. But saddle was available, so it wouldn't have been special ordered (or, at least it was available on a chevy). Nice burb regardless of the color. I have a 76 with a special paint code - and am having a hard time deciding if it was fleet orange or Sport model orange, neither of which were available on stock 76 10-30s. Don't you just wish they put in parentheses what they actually painted the truck with!, Ha)

EDIT: was the gold/white interior just a pickup thing and anniv burbs had saddle?

Just re-read and caught your interior was white. Wow. That's a puzzler.

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

That is a stock production color called Saddle. The 50th anniversary Chevy Trucks used what you started seeing in '70...Medium Gold Poly. If that's all original paint, then the special paint is the white paint inside

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

That sure looks like faded saddle to me. Saddle paint when new is actually a very very light brown, hence the name. Looks more brownish once next to medium gold for sure. If it's a special shade of paint, other than saddle, the interior being painted in white is definitely a special paint thing. All the 50th anniversary Chevys came with white vinyl and gold inserts... 10-30, K/5, Suburban, etc.

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

Saddle wasn't a GMC color but a Chevrolet truck color. I bet that's why 599 is listed.

Is there a paint code on the SPID?

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

This is Saddle Fawn from '68 Chevy next to anniversary gold:

http://images.tcpglobal.com/chips/19...truck-pg01.jpg

The saddle paint for pre-70 trucks was in no way comparable to the saddle interiors in the years to follow. I see it as a goldish shade more than a brown at all.

Saddle Poly wasn't offered in '67 or '68 on Chevys according to this chart.

http://images.tcpglobal.com/chips/th...truck-pg01.jpg

It was in '66 and '69:

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

Happy Burbday! I am amazed I was right for once. Hasn't been the pattern here lately . Then again, I didn't post that recently either

Thanks Kalle, for coming back to post a thanx. Colors sure change with age. It's like Medium Olive Poly. Faded and dull it looks like a murky pea soup green, but fresh it's a mild candy apple green that jumps out and grabs you. The metallic goldish shades turn darker to a dull brownish shade. Metallics get darker and solids get lighter, except white? I've always stayed with original color with trucks I've painted*. When people would see I was fixing up to paint they would ask what color it would be and I'd say same color only to get an "I see" type response based on how it looked at that time. They'd see it once done and it was "WOW! That looks fantastic!!!"

Your Suburban is truly special (kinda like that...heh heh) with a contrasting interior color. I have never seen one done in that way in any color... I don't think. It's cool to see a color GM used on trucks, but not the one it is on (normally).I had a '95 K3500 that was Emerald Green. I put a utility body on, swapped the flared front fenders with non-flare/added Bushwacker flares, and put a ram-air hood on, so I decided to go custom and paint it Fairway Green. A color Chevy put on S10s and Vettes that year but not CKs. It was a double taker for anyone who knew it wasn't a production color.

*Ok, not that '95

I wouldn't have even known! Thanks for pointing it out.

According to the protect-o plate it was first put into service on 4/12/68 which is a likely my son will be born on so that is the date that has been on my mind.

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

I had a 68 GMC 1500 LWB stripper, no options except WW tires., with exactl same colors as 50th Chevrolet. Built in Fremont but never has SPID on glovebox door. Stupid me sold it after installing Chevy clip.

I always love the little unique colors or options on these trucks and what makes them special... Some more so than others

Re: GMCs with 50th paint

See that? There is how it looks fresh. It's a darker gold, but turns more brownish with age. I bought a '70 C/30 in Medium Gold Poly original paint (former Winnebago) that had faded to look like Saddle Poly when fresh...without the shine. You can see a little in the background from before I touched it, next one with fresh paint, and finally the last job I used it on...for comparison. Pretty sure the 50th gold is same as '70 production color
