Re: what could go wrong....
Around these parts, people leave bulky items out for pick up by the local trash collector. But the people driving trucks loaded like the one in the OP scavenge the metal all the time. I had some beer bottles in my recycle bin, and someone took them out, in the process leaving cardboard all over. I could go back through my camera footage, but don't care enough to do that. So, I don't put the barrels out until the day of trash collection. Nobody has the cojones to litter in broad daylight...usually.
One good thing- I saw one of them driving down the street with a genuine Radio Flyer little red wagon on top of the pile. I offered him $5 for it. He scampered up the side of that pile and had it down in a jiffy. It needs a dent taken out and a tire and wheel, but otherwise it is in excellent condition.

Re: what could go wrong....
I see these guys with 8 foot high sides, piled full of ****. As long as they don't go on the freeway and drop stuff that destroys people's cars, more power to them, I guess. Though they are stealing the recycling value from the trash collection companies, who give us the barrels and curb side pickup service for big junk.
