434 camshaft and intake selection
I am currently in the process of building my new motor for my 71 C10 longbed. The setup that I currently have is as follows:
-Dart SHP block with splayed caps -Scat Excalibur forged crank -Scat H beam rods -Wiseco Forged -9.5cc pistons -AFR 220 heads with 65cc chambers(race ready) -MSD 6AL(set at 7000rpm limiter) Truck has: -Ford 8.8 with 4.11 rear gears -700R4 or 200R4 trans(i have 1 of each and haven't done much research into them yet) Still need to find a camshaft and an intake so I can finish putting it together and start on my trans. I do plan on do a 100-150 shot of nitrous. What does everyone recommend for a camshaft and intake manifold for this setup? I'm looking to be right in the 650-700 horsepower range before the nitrous, but if my math works right that setup should be somewhere in the low 600s before nitrous. |

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Normally I don't recommend a single plane on a street application (i'm assuming you are going to drive it on the street?), but the nitrous will work better on a single plane due to more even distribution. You also have the RPM to actually utilize a single plane. A performer RPM would be my second choice for intake.
You'll want a good bit of stall (3000+rpm converter). As for the cam, I'd call a cam company and see if you can get a recommendation. They should also be able to recommend a converter stall range too. the 700r4 is going to require an expert transmission builder and a few dozen upgraded hard parts to stay together. The 200-4R might be just a bit better but I'd use a TH400 or 4L80E. use the biggest transmission cooler you can find.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Thank you for the response! I tried talking to summit who I usually order my parts through, but there knowledge with this setup is very limited. I never considered just calling comp cams directly.
The truck is not really a street truck. With the current motor and rear gears on a th350 it gets absolutely terrible mileage. Also doesn't help that I live 20 miles from the nearest town and highway speed I rest around 3800 rpm. I'm kinda stuck on one of the 2 transmissions that I have. The 200r is alot more tempting due to it being the same length as the th350 thats already in the truck. I will get ahold of the shop that would do the trans locally and feel them out on the ability they have to rebuild it for higher power applications. |

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
i hear you on the highway mileage. My turbo LS gets 9mpg and turns 3400rpm+ even with the 3.07 gears.
Years ago, I spent north of $3500 at two different transmission shops trying to get a 700-r4 to hold behind a 11:1 vortec head 383. That motor was just a 400hp motor. That experience soured me from automatic transmissions for a long time. Now the only person I trust to build my transmissions is me. I don't see you having a chance with a radical 434 in front of a 700r4, but maybe parts have improved in 12 years.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
I don't see 650-700hp with a 7k rpm limit and 434 cubes. 550-600 is more reasonable.
I'd go for something in the 250@.050 duration range. I run a 247/251@.050 solid on my 388.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
As for the 700r4 transmission, you might want to talk to Clinebarger. He's a member here and is on the drivetrain section mostly. He's a whiz when it comes to that particular transmission.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Re your engine parts request...read this...its a 2012 article but has all the part numbers in it plus hp / torque figures etc...
http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/eng...k-engine-build Re 700R4 r 200R4 rans....unless you are willing to dump $3500 into either one they wont last... Suggest 4L80E and add an aftermarket controller.... Hope this helps... Bill

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Dam, I've been around small blocks way too long to get that close with my guess.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Put a super victor on it. You will be surprised on how well it will work. For a cam I would put a hydraulic roller it in. Call comp and talk to them. 4L80 and a controller on it will get the trans to hold up.

The point is, theres a 50hp difference between 10psi and 14psi for me, but I can't feel it or use it on the street. Most of my full throttle stabs are less than three seconds because I've either blown the tires off and the truck is sideways or I've gained 40mph.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
Check Richard Holdener's YouTube channel. He's pretty interesting and his energy makes it fun to watch. He dyno tests all kinds of combinations for the small block, LS, and many of the others as well.

Re: 434 camshaft and intake selection
that Skip White race engine, I looked at the specifics
13.5:1 Edelbrock Super Victor II AFR220 full cnc work solid roller 262/267 @.050 .667/.652 lift 106LSA 950-1050 cfm carb doesn't say what fuel they used for the dyno, but I bet it's a quality race fuel Q16 or similar. If you setup like that, you'd probably get close to 700hp Your compression looks like about 11 - 11.4:1? depending on gasket and piston-to-deck feed with pump fuel? with something more streetable, say 250ish and less lift I'd say yes you would be down ~80-100hp from that dyno result engine. 600-620hp should be very easy with what you have and streetable
