2006 chevy express oil pressure
I have noticed on my van with 6.0 the oil pressure gauge has started worry for me. I have put maybe 4k miles on it since purchase and when I 1st bought it cold startup pressure was a little less than 40lbs and once hot down to about 15lbs at idle. Now at cold start it is just one mark above the low danger red mark but once it is at operating temp bumps up to about 20-25lbs which is opposite of anything I have ever seen. Am I looking at more of gauge/sending unit issue or should I really be worried about actual low pressure?

Re: 2006 chevy express oil pressure
What oil are you running?
How many miles on the truck? Does engine make any noises? Does oil pressure come up when driving? If it does, what pressure is showing at say 45 mph? Biggest oil pressure issue with these is the oil pickup O ring into the pump, or, a bad pump.... There is also a oil gallery plug that has O ring hardening alowing the oil pressure to bypass back to the sump.... Hope this helps

Lost my hearing so will need to find someone else to listen for noises, wife says she don't hear anything but she is not mechanically oriented either. Pressure does increase when driving. When still cold it will get up to about 15lbs when hot it is still around 40lbs. It is totally opposite of my old 350's. When they were cold they would have great pressure but when hot they would drop to nothing. I put the 5w30 oil in it with ac delco filter. Should I run different oil with the higher mileage? I know eventually I will be putting a motor in it but was hoping to hold off till late summer and be able to recoup some of the money I spent buying it. I have just shy of 20K tied up in it and expected to have 25K so i still have room for the engine. New unit is $89k so I am still happy even with all the little stuff Thanks for the reply

Re: 2006 chevy express oil pressure
Some of the 6.0’s have a screen under the oil pressure sending unit that gets clogged and throws the readings off. I’d start there if it were me. My brother in law has an 06 2500 HD that had that problem. It didn’t take me long to get it fixed.

Re: 2006 chevy express oil pressure
Sure, this is the best I can do at the moment but YouTube can probably enlighten you further if need be. Basically it’s at the back of the block similarly to the old small blocks. It’s down behind the plastic intake manifold. I’ve got a bare 6.0 block from a 2010ish Silverado that’s torn down on my stand. The sensor threads into the valley cover as seen below. Imagine the intake and heads being in your way and you’ll be on your way.
I’ve never messed with an LS motor in a van so I have no idea how much of a pain in the ass it will be, it’s about a 6/10 on the pain in the ass scale in the trucks. The sensor pictured didn’t come with the screen or I would have taken a picture of it as well.

Re: 2006 chevy express oil pressure
ok that looks easy enough. I should be able to get to it removing the motor box cover.
I ordered a new one with the screen from Rock Auto so hopefully it will be here in a few days & I can get it put on. Thanks for the help

Re: 2006 chevy express oil pressure
The sensor maybe junk but I would remove the stock sender, purchase an adapter for a "real" aftermarket oil pressure sender just for temporary. Auto Meter makes a pretty low cost 2" oil pressure gauge. Its electric so all you need for the gauge is 12 volt and ground and the the lead from the sender to the gauge.
Then run the van and see what it shows. |
