2,3 or 4 series carrier?

How do you tell what series carrier you have for your rear end? Do the numbers stamped on it tell you or do you have to measure something?
Thanks,
Taylor

I don't know the for sure answer to all of it but... Four series carriers are for gear ratios greater than 3.73:1. So, if you have 4.11's you have a four series carrier, if you have 3.08's you have a three series carrier. This goes for GM gears only, there are aftermarket suppliers that will sell different gear ratios to fit on different carriers.
