Car Covers and Wind
With the hot weather coming up I want to get car covers for my stuff. I don't have enough garage space for all my cars. And I live in the desert.
The big problem is that it gets REALLY windy up here and they fly away like a kite. I found one cover that got caught in my fence. I never found the other one. I try to hold them down but they still fly away with all the high winds. I've put bags of fertilizer on them to hold them down and the wind still gets them. I've looked on the internet but the last ones said that they could withstand high winds. That wasn't true. so I'm asking. Any recommendations on one that can take the wind. The internet ads are B.S. I don't trust them. Once bitten twice shy.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
The one I used in the past had 2 draw strings that went under from one side to the other seem to work well, sorry can't remember the make though
Ah I just remembered the manufacture, Rust-Oleum |

Re: Car Covers and Wind
I cover my diesel truck, it gets used the least in summer and the clear coat is taking a beating. I purchased a brass grommet kit and put extra grommets in for more anchor points. I also bought those little bungees with the plastic ball to anchor to all the areas, eight to be exact, two front, two sides, two back. It has tube steps and custom front and rear bumpers to anchor on. I do remove it when we get bad storms though, since having one get torn to shreds in a high wind thunderstorm=-$125

Re: Car Covers and Wind
You're retired. Pay attention to the weather forecast and pull them off when they call for gusty conditions. If windy conditions are called for the following morning before noon, just take it off the night before . I don't think it's too good for the paint to have the fabric whipping and rubbing on it if it did stay on.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
That fabric rubbing is a fact of life. When I had my '68 Skylark and went on travel, I would put the car cover on it. The high winds here blew dust under the cover and chafed the paint badly in some places. I had a really nice California Car Cover.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
I have and have had California Car Covers. They are nice but the one that blew away was a California C.C. I guess it blew back to Southern California.
My neighbor has a nice cover on his boat and it doesn't fly off. I'd ask him where he got it but unfortunately he just died. So that's out. I personally dislike car covers. They are a pain to put on. But I don't like my cars out in the elements either. The weather reports around here are always getting it wrong. I can't depend on them at all. And the weather changes super fast around here. One minute it's calm and then it's blowing like crazy. Then it stops. Then it does it again.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
I was thinking carport, but that underground deal is pretty cool. Does it come with a hand crank for when the power goes out?

A Porsche Park. Made for it. And don't forget to check the box for that optional bilge pump.

I had that thought, too! Though Paul lives pretty high up.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
That is cool. And that looks just like my car.
My problem is that if it was underground, I'd forget where I parked my car. I've been thinking about a out building. But I have no room here. I've got plenty of room at my other place but it's 20 minutes away. And I want to sell that place anyway. I never go there. I can't see putting money into it. I looked at the lot next door but I'm in the hills. It isn't flat at all. I'd have to level it and build a building $$$$ and deal with the zoning nazi's. Too much of a headache for me. There is an old gas station right by me that I'd love to get but they want too much for it. It's been for sale for years now. You would think that they would come down on the price but they don't.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
Paul, This is what I've used on a couple cars I had to let sit outside before my shop was roofed.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/18-Layer-Ca...Cclp%3A2334524 They last bout 2-3 years in the south carolina sun/heat/humidity before the top layer starts to go. I had one on my firebird for about 2 years. I never noticed any paint damage, but it's not exactly a nicely painted car either. As others have mentioned, they have loops to draw it tight under the middle of the car. This one also has an elastic band around the base like a bed sheet, so it wraps under the nose and tail pretty well. We get some pretty violent weather here and the only time I ever had an issue was when I didn't tie the strap under the car. If I remember right, you need your own strap. I used bungees. They're fairly heavy and have a soft padding on the bottom. I would still probably test it out on your least favorite car first

Re: Car Covers and Wind
Heh, not here. With warm weather I don't feel so bad about a vehicle sitting out. Especially once we get our dry spell.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
I live in the desert. The sun can be brutal. I can get a sunburn just picking up my mail at the mailbox. Thank god for air conditioning. It gets hotter than a stolen pistol around here in summer. I'm not looking forward to it. My electric bill is going to go through the roof. I need solar. But the solar people seem like a bunch of crooks. And I don't want them to jack up my roof. I don't trust them.

Re: Car Covers and Wind
I don't have all the answers... but I wish I had just left mine to the mercy of the elements.
Choose your car cover well and cinch it down good. Throw some terry towels under it too. I thought I was doing the right thing, but my paint looks like a geological survey.

It reminds me of a truck I had with a bedliner. The bedliner was supposed to protect the paint and it it ended up scratching the holy guacamole out of it. I would have been better off without it.
