Axles won't go back in

Man, I thought the hard part was done. I removed the c-clips and pulled the axels, no problem. Now that I am trying to put it back together both axles seem to hit something solid about 4 inches from seating. They never seem to enter the spines. The diff is a 12 bolt with limited slip. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Axles won't go back in

Is the diff. the same diff. that was in it when you took it apart?

Re: Axles won't go back in

There's a weld/step inside the axle housing,
push down on the big end of the axle to raise the small end as you push the axle in .........

Re: Axles won't go back in

That thing they are hitting is the carrier. If you are just sliding the axles in, they are just laying on the bottom of tube and will never go in. Put some leverage on the lug end to raise the carrier end up and they will slide in.

Re: Axles won't go back in

I kind of tried the lift up thing, I will try it again. Well that took 10 second to get both in. I pulled them back about a foot and pushed down, they moved up a lot, didn't expect that. But they pushed right in.

Thanks a ton guys. I probably would not have slept tonight without fixing that!

Re: Axles won't go back in

Okay I am still have an issue with seating these axles. I went out this morning to put the c-clips back in. But after I got the clips in I pulled the axle back to seat the c-clips and install the pin. Now the axles do not go in far enough to touch the seal. The diver side has about 1/4" of shiny metal showing and the passenger side have even more.

71-72 axles in a 67-mid 70 housing ?

71-72 axles are longer than 67-70.

Oh crap!!!! I have no idea, I would not be surprised. I did not take picture of this before I tore it down, I never saw any grease coming out of the axle tube. Do you know the lengths of these two different axles? Of course, I don't really know if this is a C10 rear end!!!!!! I guess I need to do some measuring.

According to RockAuto 72 is 31 7/16 and a 68 is 30 3/4"

Re: Axles won't go back in

That looks normal to me. If you didn't have that 1/4" exposed, then you wouldn't be able to install/uninstall the c-clips.
