I'm currently having my 72 c10 stepper z'd, bagged to lay frame...will have 2 ViAir compressors, 1 5 gallon tank, 8 valves to prevent side to side issues, 4 link suspension in the rear, 3 switches and a train horn. Will be fun!

Very nice man! I will have to check it out today... Im just a contractor out here. I know you guys hate us filling up the bases! I also see you have quite a collection of german toys. I have a few of them myself, a 2002 VW GTI 337 Ed. and a 2003 BMW 330Xi(Individual) in Dakar Yellow with a 1.9L Lysholm blower bolted up to it.

Alright peeps, I have a question...

I have been talking to a vendor about getting my wheels and he came up with a question that I really dont know the answer to... He was wondering if my rear end has the wide or narrow housing. Anyone know what the two look like? and maybe how big of a difference there is?

Im looking at running a 20x9.5(because they dont make a 10" wide w/ stepped lips) and trying to decide the backspacing I am gonna go with. Im thinking something like 4.75-5"


Oh, and here is a pic to maybe help clarify what I have

Pretty sure you have the wider diff. .75" wider per side 1.5" overall. Later 5 lug trucks came with the wider diff. with bigger drums. Early 6 lug trucks are narrower.

I am really enjoying your build! I'm building a 72 short wide that was Hugger Orange also. Have not made up my mind if it will be Orange again but I do like yours. Subscribing to your build.

Can't wait to see your LS/T56 stuff.

Thanks for the input! Oh, and I have decided against the T56. Im going to go with a 4L60E. I came to the realization that its gonna cost me significantly more to do the T56

A T56 would be so cool but your right it is more money, time & effort. The auto w/overdrive is the route I'm taking also. My wife loves the color of your truck.. I am torn between Orange or Black for mine. I really like Black but it's such a pain to keep nice.

Sadly the black GMC is gone but I do still have the wheels. The GMC had a 9" Ford rear out of a Granada sized Continental, not sure of the over all width. I can tell you I had to space the rear rims out about a .25" on each side to keep them from rubbing on the inner wheel housing.

The rims are polished TT2's 17 & 20 w/a 5x5 bolt pattern. Tires are now BFG KDW 255/40ZR-17 & 295/45R-20. They fit my 72 project truck very well and will be the rim & tire combo I run on that truck. My only concern is the wider diff. I tried the rears and had plenty of room on the inner but am a little concerned about the outer. I'm running a much larger rear tire than before (in the hub garage pictures). I am not planning on cutting into the bed floor and will limit the travel (same as the GMC's ride height). Let me get back to you on the spacing and rim widths.

Yea, I didnt want to cut my bed either! I might possibly in the future raise the bed floor a bit, just to get a few inches. We will see...

Im really interested in the backspacing and widths of the fronts to be honest... Im trying to decide what backspacing I want to do on my custom wheels and yours are on point!

Merry Christmas

I had my son and his friend help me dig these wheels out and measure them up while they were here for the holiday. The tires are mounted but we still got an accurate measure.

Here is what we found:

Front 17" x 9" (9.5" outside lip to lip width) w/4" backspacing & 5 on 5 bolt pattern
Rear 20" x 10.5" (11" outside lip to lip width) w/4" backspacing & 5 on 5 bolt pattern

If I was going to buy new rims for my 72 with the wider diff. I would go 4.5" backspacing on the rears. That is the only change I would make. It would center the wheel tire combo better with the larger tire size I run.

The smallest backspace I can order with those is 4". Im thinking a 4.5" BS would be the best. You think I could fit the 4" BS under my rears?

The fronts however, are going to be 8" wide. If I were to go the same route as you on them, I would need a 3" BS.

Yes to your rear rim question. I think that would be perfect with that wide of a wheel.

I can tell you my GMC was running factory front inner wheel tubs with factory front control arms bagged (your earlier setup). It also had 2.5" drop spindles. What I don't know is if these spindles relocated the wheel further inboard. But I don't think so.

As I mentioned earlier my tires are BFG KDW 255/40ZR-17 & 295/45R-20 that is 25.2" overall diameter with a 10.2" section width on a 9.0" rim for the 17's and 30.5" overall diameter with a 11.6" section width on a 10" rim for the 20's.

You are way ahead of me at this point. I am in the Auto Body phase, currently body off with my 72 and I've not started my suspension mods yet. Once the truck is 95% ready to paint I will start the mockup phase (Can't wait for this part). One more thing that I don't think is a factor but both my trucks are rear leaf suspension trucks, just an FYI.

Are you running factory front inner wheel tubs? How much room do you have with your current rally wheel setup? Can you or someone you trust take the truck to your local tire store and test your desired wheel tire combo? With the information above you can mock up my setup and then check to see if it works or what the tire store can recommend.

If not I would go the 4" back spacing in the front to be safe..

Hmmmm, good advice! I was thinking the 4" in the front was gonna be the magic number. I dont have the original inner wheel tubs up front, but I do remember when I mocked them up I made PLENTY of wheel clearance.

Unfortunately, the trick is kinda broken in its place right now. The last time I drove it, the left rear air line shifted onto the exhaust and melted. So right now there is no suspension! LOL

Screw it, Im gonna order all of them with 4"BS... If the rears dont fit, I will just narrow the diff. the fronts should fit

for what it worth, Im running 18x 8 on the front of mine with 5" bs, 245/45/18 and 18x9.5 on the back with 5.5 bs and a 28x12x18 mickey thompsom tire....my truck is a bagged 86c10, lays frame so the tires tuck really well and do not rub...the rear tires are 1/2 away from touching the fenders on the inner fender and have a 1-1 1/2" of clearance from the outer fenders of the box...I think you could run 4.5" bs on the rear, but you wouldnt want to go any wider than a 10" wheel...If I could do it all again, I'd go with a 10-10.5" wheel with 5" bs.....just my opinion....the fronts dont rub at all cause I have no inner fenders....lol.
