Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Didn't get quite as much done as I was hoping this weekend, but then again I didn't even make it out to the garage yesterday. Today, with the help of my son, we got the steering gearbox and linkage all on. Also got the brake dust shields, front wheel bearings packed (still can't find my stinkin' packer, so did that by hand), and got the rotors on. Also threw a coat of paint on two stablizer bushing retainers and the stablizer mounts. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the progress. Yesterday, I got a bunch of work done in the house on the RC Car workbench area now that it's the summer racing season.

In other news, my air compressor was confirmed to be no longer compressing today. Sort of a bummer, but I'm looking forward to a nicer one at this point. It was a 15 year old Campbell Hausfield (sp?) oil-less compressor. Noisy sucker. On the big side of what's needed for brad nailers, pneumatic sockets, or the impact wrench (most of the time), but still way too small for running sanders, sand blast booth, etc. Should have gone bigger back in the day when I was single and had nothing better to spend the money on. Plus, it would probably still be running versus this oil-less jobber that has now given up the ghost.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

It looks good. as far as the compresser goes I bought a compresser from Lowe's and only paid 580.00 for it and with a CFM of 11.50 does a good job. I use all my tools with it. sand blaste,r sanders, wrenches. Kobolt is the name.

I got the front calipers on and finished bolting the engine and trans in. I'll post some pics of the fancy rebuilt red calipers at some point. I'm thinking they'll look familiar...

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Yeah! I'm itching to get the cab on the frame. I think I'll get the exhaust run back under where the cab will go first. Am I missing anything else that should be done before putting the cab back on? It will really free up some space in the garage.

I think I have a line on another air compressor, too. 60 gallon, 5 hp job. I was out in the garage today trying to find a good spot for it.

Glad it helped, George.

Picked up this compressor for FREE. It's from work and has a lot of hours on it, but it was still good when taken out of service due to an equipment upgrade.

Thats a good deal What CFM is that compresser. I see that it is a dual head compresser. A 220 unit also. I hope that it works for you.

Hey you got another compresser. So now you can't use that as a excuse for not working on her.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Sure I can, because the compresser isn't working properly

About all I did in the garage this weekend was run wiring from the panel over to the compresser. Fired her up and the motor starts kicking off and on when the compresser comes up to speed. The motor gets really hot and starts slowing down and eventually shuts down on the thermal switch. Motor runs fine without the belt on it, and the compresser and motor seem to run fine when I removed the tube running from the compresser to the tank. I'm thinking there's a check valve or something in there sticking closed or something like that. Time to do some research and figure it out, I guess. It did sit for a while after it was taken out of service. Plus, it was a free compresser, so I shouldn't get too bummed about it. Still pretty frustrating not getting to work on Mustard at all.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

I think so. My power supply to the compresser had 3 wires plus the ground running to a junction box that I ran the new cable for the compresser to. The third wire is the common for supplying both 120 and 240 vac. I accidentally hooked up one hot wire and the common, rather than two hot wires. I only had 120 vac to the compresser. So th fix was as simple as swapping two wires around, but I didn't realize the mistake until I had spent several hours changing pulleys around, swapping on an extremely undersized 3/4 hp motor. Now I'm in the process of getting the 3 hp motor back on there, so I haven't actually confirmed that I'm out of the woods quite yet, but I'm pretty confident that was the problem.

Saw that you posted on my build and followed your link. Looks like you are coming right along on your build. I definitely know that "well, there is no better time to fix <whatever> than now while I've got it all apart" syndrome Never seems to end. Good job on all that rust repair. Mine hasn't needed nearly as much as you've done, but the floor is still kickin' my butt! Good luck getting your compressor working.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Well, the compressor is now officially operational following connecting it to the full 240V it needed? Now back to Mustard! Started getting the exhaust system back together. Not. Sure if this system, which was originally for the old coil spring frame will work with this leaf spring setup, so I'm only going back to the center cross member, or a little behind it. This way I can get the cab on pretty soon

Hey man. Any up dates to your truck. thanks for coming by and looking at my build. Got a few more parts in also.
tie rods and boots
window cranks repair kits
head light adjusting screws and nuts
arm rest and dash pad
fuel line and front brake lines (rubber)

Are you still looking for some arm rest. I might have a set of 67 thru 70 the big ones. I did some trading and they came in with the trade. A different set of ones I am using. But they look just like the ones I post on my site.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Yeah, the turned picture deal is due to my posting from my phone. I forget to check the orientation, and then lack the ambition, etc. to fix it once it's posted.

10.4 cfm at 90psi is what the compressor turns out. A bit less than what yours is rated for, but still bunches more than what I had before.

I did manage to get some work done on the truck yesterday as far as the exhaust goes, but at the end of the day I felt like I went a bit backwards. The dual exhaust system that was on Mustard was pretty new when I took the truck apart, so I was going to reuse most of the pipe and replace the glasspacks with a set of Thrush turbo mufflers. I couldn't get the front pipes to work with this frame and the new motor mounts for whatever reason, as the drivers side for sure interferes with the auto trans crossmember (which come to think of it wasn't there before with the manual trans). So, the pipes are getting cut up and I'm going to end up welding up a "custom" system. I believe dual exhaust systems are typically different for coil spring and leaf spring trucks, too, and loyal readers will recall that Mustard has been converted from a coil spring setup to a leaf spring setup. So thing's may change over the rear axle, too. I'd like to at least get the new exhaust run under where the cab goes for now, and maybe add on to it later. I'd LOVE to get the cab on there pretty soon.

I'm also developing a plan to modify how the leaf springs (probably going with 2.5" wide units) will mount to the axle. My u-bolts are only 2-3/8" on the insides. Plus, the new leaf springs will likely be 26" from the front eye to the center bolt, versus the 24" that was stock on these trucks (can't find a heavy enough spring with the 24" front dimension). So, I'm planning to fabricate a block for the top to utilize some long grade 8 bolts to replace the u-bolts, with the block compensating for the center bolt, which will need to be 2" off center of the axle tube to maintain the 127" wb. This plan will also include either drilling an extra hole in each spring pad on the axle tube for the center bolt to locate it with the 2" offset. I've researched the crap out of this on this site and can't seem to find anybody else that's done it (at least that's posted anything about it). Twas hoping to simply copy somebody elses work.

Zero rate blocks will compensate for either 1" or 1.5" forward or backward, however you also gain 1" lift: http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/Zero%20Rates.htm Not what you need, but maybe stimulate some ideas.
