Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

I finished sanding the passenger side rockers finally and shot on some self etching primer. I am real happy with how the transition from the front rocker to the rear came out.

I suppose I need to put an interior together next. Then exhaust.

I shot some flat white Krylon on the rockers and started putting in some Home Depot sound deadener. I just bought one 7" x 25' roll to see how it works. It is not sticking too well, but the shop is a little chilly. I'll go over it for a bit with the heat gun and see if it holds better. the one roll covered a little over half of the passenger side floor.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

Is that the tar backed stuff? I am searching for sound/heat deadener for my crew. So far Fatmat seems like the best choice. $150 for 100sq ft and comes with the "install kit."

I was trying to find what I used on the Home Depot site, but couldn't. I have to tell you, based on your earlier comments about the stuff, the first thing I did when I found it in the store was cut the packaging and smell it. I found no tar odor. I will get more info up when I buy more.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

Since I need more material to continue with the interior, I did a little patch work on the rear door. I really didn't want to spend much time on the doors as I would like to get some better doors, but here we go. For the time being I am working with what I have.

Passenger side rear door is good enough for now. It needs lots more sanding before it is done, but no time for that quality yet.

I finally made it back to home depot to get the rest of my sound deadening. Not much progress on the truck because I have been trying to finish up my logging project in the back yard.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

After splitting wood for a couple hours after work I actually got a little done on the truck. I finished sound deadening the passenger side floor. I found out that a light coat of 3M super 77 really makes this stuff stick.

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

So I was looking at this U.Seal stuff.. So basically a 25' roll is around $17-$20 for what I am seeing. 25' roll that is 6" wide is only 12.5ft^2. So lets say it takes 100ft^2 to do the crew cab, that means you need 8 rolls of the stuff, which comes out to about $140. So if that's true, fatmat is $149.99 for a roll of 100 sq ft and comes sticky backed with tools to install it. I am not sure if the U.seal makes it easier being in small strips or not. Still trying to determine what route I take but your crew is looking good!

Math doesn't lie my friend. It probably does make sense to just buy the proper stuff from fatmat for that nominal price difference. I suppose there are advantages of the thin strips in some areas, but some scissors can make a wide strip into a thin strip pretty easily. The U-Seal is adhesive backed, but does not stick well when it is cold. When I hit it with the heat gun it stuck nice and tight. I didn't bother getting a fire going in the shop so it was only about 40 degrees and it did not want to stick well at all.

I just went through you entire build. That truck is going to be fun! I really like the hood. Good to know there is another guy out there who likes to shape metal!

Can't wait to see it on the road!

Re: Daddyjeep Hauler - 85 K30 crew cab short bed

I finished sound deadening the floor and the back of the cab this weekend as well as insulating it. I was really happy with how the Home Depot duct insulation worked out. I sprayed the floor and the back of the insulation with 3M super 77 and sealed all of the seams with aluminum tape.

[IMG][/IMG]

[IMG][/IMG]

After the insulation I started covering everything with some heavy felt I had in the shop. I ran out of spray adhesive so I didn't get it completely done, but couldn't resist throwing a seat in there for the first time in a year.

Looking good! Do you have an approximation of how much of the sound deadener you used?

I used 4 rolls on the floor and back of cab, so 50 sq/ft. I will need at least two more to do the doors and some of the roof. I don't think I am going to 100% cover the roof. The 100 sq/ft you had mentioned before should be about right and would allow for a little more coverage on the roof.

Looking good! I used 100 sf on mine and it did the whole floor, parts of all the door skins and about 2/3 of the roof.
