It still has the dealer bumper on it.

Its little late to the game, but I thought I would mention this since you're using a low buck approach. I have seen mention of using a Harley shift rod as an adjustable throttle rod. I have found a few stock ones on feebly from guys who upgraded but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I will be needing one for my next build which is a '70.

Thanks, I love the shop truck look and redneck bumps and mirrors...

I bought the Jegs linkage for about $25 bucks shipped...
It installed and adjusted easily and is really smooth...

Tack everything into place. and then tack every 4 inches (in different areas of the patch) in a slow progression. let everything cool for a good while. take your air grinder (or dremel or grinder with a feathering wheel) and smooth the tacks down. take your flat hammer and planish your welds as to not let them shrink. then over lap those welds and repeat. The trick with sheet metal is to take your time. A small 8"x8" patch for me can take up to an hour to be done correctly. The corner weld you have on your door are looking good, they feather discs that have a "wrap" designed specifically for those types of welds (not sure if you are using them of have them).

Anyway just thought Id offer my advice, helpful or not.

Good luck and keep at it! Looks great.
Thank you for the welding tips...
I'm not patient at all so the cooling off periods to finish patches simply KILL ME...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I never knew going into this whole "body work/paint/metal-fab/black hole would take so stinking looooonnnnngggggg....

That's what I get for pondering the idea of...

"Gee, it sure would be nice if my truck didn't look like the Partridge Family bus."

I've spent the last few weeks meeting with a few shops to take over from here as my patience has worn a little thin lately and I want it done... However...

Let's just say things ain't gonna' happen that way due to "differing opinions" on how "they" want to do "my" truck... Their ideas as opposed to mine...

The world I grew up in consisted of... I want this, this and this...
How much is that gonna' cost? OK... Deal...
Here's your money... All parties are happy... But

These clowns won't even call you back with a price or even tell you whether they even want the work...
If you can't even return a call then I don't want you near my truck...
Thank you...

That's my signal to just keep doing what I've been doing...

So.... I'm in this whole body work chasm for sure now...

I apologize for the rant...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

So the last time I posted I was working on getting the rot from the bottom of the doors replaced with new shiny metal...

Got that finished and primed them up and rehung them...
Check that off the list...

I put a drivers bedside on that was in somewhat better shape than the one was on the bed when I got it. Still needed work, just not as much work...

Stripped it bare and primed it all up...

Then with a little help from friends and neighbor's, we carried it back up front... Sideways, through the fence gate... Again...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

It was right about this time that I started to deal with the "shop" guys...

After I told them to go fly a kite on a windy day...

It just so happened to be a real windy day so, that's just what my girls and I did...

This ones cruises at about 80 MPH in a 20+ MPH wind... Fun...

It's so loud cutting through the sky, it sounds like it's murdering the air...
My favorite one, I might add...

This one I call Tiny...
It's like a B-52 Bomber that will drag your a__ all across the field on a good, windy day...

Who needs a membership to a gym...
Just try to hang onto this thing for a while...

By the way... That is a 10 foot wing span on Tiny...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

I scored a few things that will help complete the "theme" of the truck when it's finished... One day?

I found a NOS Realistic radio antennae off Flea-bay that I believe will blend with the redneck mirrors well...

Flea-bay NOS score...

Thar' ain't a single, whiskey chuggin', beer swiggin', moonshine runnin', gun totin', ragged cowboy hat wearin, 'Bocephus blaring, redneck truck drivin', dog hangin' out the window, slobberin', farmer tanned, red blooded 'Merican boy, that ain't got one of these in them thar kuntry, boy, pick'em' up truck...

You ain't got one?
What are you?
Some kinda' pinko' commie?

I also scored a real nice square body too...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

So I dive off into this "body work" world head first...

I found out there's nothing worse than a tool that won't function properly...

Take for instance this slide hammer from HF a friend gave me...
It wouldn't grab the little rod thingy' for all the money in the world...

I sat down, cooled my jets a little, and came up with an idea guaranteed to make it work better from that point forward and well into the future...

I've brought you up to date as to where I'm at on this beater...

Oh, wait... I almost forgot...

I found these... Rust free and nearly perfect pieces...

I just erased HOURS of body work off the "to do" list...

Until next time, keep on truckin'...

I was in the same boat with the body shops. Most of them are not interested in this type of work. They do collision repair and collision repair only. Straight insurance work. That's their business and how they make a living, hard to fault them for that. But there are shops that will do what you ask, it's just hard to find them.

But like you, I said screw it, if I want it done I'm just gonna have to learn how and do it myself. Good idea getting the best sheetmetal you can find though. You will do fine. Yes it takes forever and you will get sanding dust everywhere. Good luck.

I've learned in my studies of body work 101 that all welds need a skim coat of glass to help them be rust resistant in the future...
Bondo will absorb moisture thru weld pinholes and cause future problems... So......
Go back & re-do stuff...

Skim coat with glass, body work road maps, grind, sand, mix, fill, sand, respirator, level, mark, fill, sand, cuss, etc...

Here we go...

Re: The misadventures of Captain Krylon - 68 C-10 barn find

The passenger side fender I am very happy with, yet I didn't take enough before pictures to show why...

I had to cut out a BAD ding in the front headlight body line area and replace it with a piece I had from another fender I had lying around...

The body lines did not match up in the headlight area the way I would have liked it to yet I learned a new trick...

My wife loves to bake and I've noticed wax paper doesn't stick to anything...
I tried out a trick I thought would work... And it DID...

I spread short strand glass on the headlight area and quickly stuck a piece of wax paper on it and formed the area with my fingers before it dried...

I left the paper on until it hardened and peeled it off and sanded into shape...

Well, you tell me if you think it worked...

Yanked the wheel back off, painted the column and fixed the cracks in the wheel with glass...

Still need to final sand & top coat it with another coat of satin black tomorrow...
