Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Here's the caddy taillights I did. I doubt I would do that again. I think I was just wanting a challenge.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Wheels are in today! I was pushing my luck with the 5" BS but it looks like I have about 3/4"-1" clearance. We'll see once I get the tires on. Hopefully this weekend. I think Friday is supposed to be in the 60's, so I'll be able to open up the garage and get some better photos. Thanks again Kyle for hooking up some savings.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Thanks again Mike for the core support. swapping out the headlight area wasn't bad at all. I reblasted it last weekend, now ready for some primer.
Steering column came in today also. It's Summit brand $300 one. (actual brand, I don't know) but I've heard good things about them. SUM-770700

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Thanks guys! While I was waiting on the wheels, I made some pulleys to take up some time.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Man, that's nice to be able to make your own pulleys. Do you work somewhere that lets you do that, or do you own the machines to do it at home?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I like the pullys! I did the exact same thing on my core support. Couldnt bring myself to spend money on a new one when I have a perfectly good 72 support I could cut up!

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

The wheels are awesome but I think I'm more impressed by the pulleys you made wow... If you had a bigger lathe and or mill you could make your own wheels

BTW, Where did you get the billet accessory brackets?

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Thanks for all the comments. I use the machines at work when I have spare time. I would like a mill and lathe at home, but I don't have room for a shop in my neighborhood.
mcbassin - I'm sure if you took the time to program some pulleys, you could break out some nice ones on the cnc. Now that the idea is planted.

Dan - Those are March Alt/AC & Power Steering brackets. Your welcome to print these brackets up and make them if you want to. Their only mocked up on the engine right now. I just have them up temporarily to take measurements for the pulleys.

Project looks great! Is that column the factory length for our trucks? Do you have a picture of the shift linkage? Thanks,

The wheels look right at home with the rubber on them. That's a huge step forward.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

I believe the column is 1" shorter than stock. I'm 6-1"/6-2" so I prefer to lose an 1" plus it's tilt. The shift linkage is like stock. But now I've got to figure out how to hook up the shaft. Needs a double D verses stock spline. I'll probably cut up my stock shaft rather than spend $150 on a new one. The column is just sitting in there now. I'm going to try and set it as close to the gauge cluster as I can get it while still being able to remove the cluster.

Re: Project "Captain Insano"

Is that measurement to the very end of the column (double D)? Also, is the column collapsible? This is for my 16 year old son and I want it to be as safe as possible. Thanks for the help.

I will pull it out tonight and take some measurements. It's not collapsible. I'll make sure the shaft to the gear box stays collapsible though. I added summit racings part number a few posts back if anyone wants to check it out on there site. They have pretty decent descriptions.

Thanks! I was a little worried that I chose too short of a tire, but I wanted the same height front/back. I love the look now.

Thanks. It's interesting that both Flaming River and Ididit list their columns as collapsible on their website, but on the Summit website it says they are not.
