My 63 farm truck build thread

I know I will step on toes here, but I feel rallies are so played out. I'm fine with them on a restored truck because they add to that look. In this case I envision a build that deserves more.

It seems to me that your after the retro work truck look. What would the owner have done if this truck were built a decade or two back. He would have invested a bit of his stash cash on some custom wheels for his pride and joy.

If you don't like the smoothies, a set of aluminum slots would look great but would require maintenance. I think a set of AR Daisy rims would compliment the look and would not be as common as the often used TT II's.

I'm also still hashing out front tire size. I feel the current 235/60s are too small.

I'm thinking 255/60s but they are on national backorder and I'm not sure if 275/60s will fit under the front being lowered like it is.

Salt Flats

I like the idea of the salt flats, too. Slots are always a good choice, and I am really digging the Crager 390's also (like a Halibrand look). I like the chrome steelies on your truck now, I think rallys would be a step backwards also.

I repainted a set of rallys for my '79, and am still on the fence about them. I have a nice set of 15x8.5 slots, but I don't think they will clear the drop coming up on the front. I have been going back and forth between the Ansen Sprints and Cragar 390's for my truck. I know that it is a whole different era of truck, but I think either would look good, and be reasonably priced.

First off, SWEET RIDE!!!! I dont even like the patina/ orignal look.

My two pennies on the wheels are Torque Thrust D's, 14's in the front 15's in the back since that is the look and period correct wheel. Hell I would go as far as trying to find a red stripe wall tire. I bet you drive too much for some true polyglass.

As for the grill, did you take the 63 grill off? If so I want it!!!! I like the big truck grill with some SS tubing or billet bars, but I love the 63 grill!!! cant beat it. I plan on doing a 63 grill the way Lakeroadster did his. Maybe this will help the big truck grill idea.

I appreciate the wheel ideas but they are just too far out of my range financially right now. Salt flats, Daisys, and Torque Thrusts run 200 bucks a wheel or more. I have been cruising every single swap meet with money and my bolt pattern gauge looking for some slots but haven't found any.

I do have a decent set of 6 lug slots but I really haven't wanted to commit to converting to 6 lug. I have a pair of axle shafts but I would have to buy rotors for the front and drums for the rear.

Powdercoat or paint the wheels then the chrome caps that you have.

Can even add a short beauty ring

I like it a lot. It's going to stay. I still won't sell my 63 grille though. It's going on the wall by my extra powdercoated 62 grille.

As much as I like Ralleys, I agree that they wouldn't do the 'theme' on this truck any justice. I also feel the tires need to remain around stock height (27-28" in front ).

Might I suggest 215-70-15's (@ 26.85") or 215-75-15's (@ 27.7") on some 15x6's. Rears can be taller if you want some rake. 255-70's work well on 15x8's (assuming that's the direction you're going). They would be 29" tall. If that's too tall, 275-60's are 28" tall & will fit the 8's w/a little bulge @ the side wall vs. being more 'square'.

I really like the 215-75/255-70 combo if it fits the front (which it should). 2nd choice would be the 215-70's if 'matching' tread patterns are a priority (some guys are that anul).

I know Kevin has this resolved, but this is a great idea. With his ability to powder coat, he could make the current wheels look pretty sweet.

Good choice! Kinda custom, but will leave most folks wondering what you did.

Yeah, blasting sand is horrible about that. Next time try a little plumbers caulk for those hard to reach places...

Kevin, it's a little out of the way, but you are more than welcome to try out my 215/70's and 255/70's on your truck before you commit to tire sizes. They are even on ralleys, if you want to confirm that might be or not be the way to go. They are on 7's and 8's, respectively.
