Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

Finished the carpet up late Friday evening. As much as I wanted to, I didn't have the time to even start the console. Hopefully, I can squeeze that in sometime this week.

Made it to the local airshow thing and had a good time. I met up with a photographer that found me on Instagram and she took a ton of great photos. I've only got the sneak peak she sent me so far, but I'm excited to see what else she makes out of them.

Shot that I took next to my neighbors one off bike that he built over the winter.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

I'm considering putting this up for sale so I can fund the next project. I have no idea what these are going for. What kind of value would you guys put on a build like this one?

But, but, but what about your tatoo??? I imagine the market is small but the right buyer would pay some good coin as the craftsmanship looks first class. Might take a little time to sell.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

I've been hitting up the local shows. Seems like it rains almost every time.

I found the tallest truck in town to park the lowest truck next to...

I started a new job and I now have access to a VERY well equipped shop whenever I need it for my own personal stuff.

I finally put the truck on a lift. This is the first time ever since I've owned it. I built the whole thing in 18" from the concrete. Kinda cool to see how it all turned out:

I tried my hand at using an English wheel to form some inner aluminum fenders. Yeah, I really suck at that. The guys at work are trying to talk me into building my fenders, engine cover, etc with rivets like an airplane (new job is building hot rod airplanes).

And I scooped up my next project: 65' Bonneville

Looking good and congrats on the new job. That sounds pretty darn cool. Can't say I've ever seen a hot rod airplane. You still thinking about selling your crew?

We take Piper Aztecs and swap out the 100hp engines to 240hp and add a bunch of new parts to the fuselage, wingtip tanks, etc.

I'll definitely sell it at some point. I need to get things finished up on it. But I never keep them...the fun is in the build and I always need the money back out of the last to build the next.

Those are sweet little planes. The company I work for had one before I started, then upgraded to a Navajo and finally a Kodiak. What are the plans for the Pontiac?

I think I'm gonna do a chop top. I came across this pic and love the laid down look of such a big car.

Figuring the bedfloor out. Looks like I'll be right around 100' of steel for the framework. 75Dually, tinybd did you guys use 1x1x.125 or lighter? I want it to support my weight, but I don't really want to use as thick if it's not needed...

Nice work! I've always loved a dropped CC dually and yours looks great. I've been scouring your thread this morning and may have missed it, but what are those seats out of?

I may have mentioned it, but I don't remember. They came out of a mid-nineties dodge caravan with wood paneling on the sides. I think it must have been some kind of a conversion. The interior was impeccable. I looked at several different seats before settling on this set. It's hard to find a set of four buckets that match.

0.125" wall 1" tube is pretty stout and heavy. I would use 14ga wall for the structure. You have plenty of tube in there and it will support a few hundred pounds for sure. Heck, 16ga wall tube would most likely work too.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

Thanks Aggie. I ended up going with .83 1x2 for the structure. Picked up the material today and I hope to get started tomorrow evening.

In the meantime, I've got a couple other irons in the fire on the big push for the largest local show of the year coming up on August 6. I started on the center console last Sunday and I think it's about halfway there. No pics for that yet, but I'm hoping to get it dropped in over the coming weekend.

I also had the pleasure of spending some time working with a well seasoned sheet metal wizard and hot rod builder to get all of my engine bay covers/inner fenders sorted. We got about halfway through it in the off hours this week. Plan is to finalize it by the end of next week.

Oh, and I tried to redo some of the connections at the compressor with yellow Teflon tape since the ptfe paste totally failed from what appears to be heat and oil seepage. Now it leaks worse than before. I'm currently searching for a thread sealant that will hold up to high heat, oil and 200psi. Suggestions?

I use Loctite 545 on all my air fittings and have not had any issue is the Las Vegas heat. It is rated to 300+ degrees and designed for sealing hydraulic and pneumatic fittings.

Loctite 545

Loctite 545 DataSheet
The datasheet shows testing with motor oil at 125 *Celsius at 100% strength to minimum 1000 hours.

I bought a bottle on Amazon but most Fastenal or similar places carry it.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

Thanks Ghostwhite, I'll be giving that stuff a try.

Cos99 - thanks! Local show in Kalispell, MT. It brought nearly 300 vehicles last year and they expect more this year.

------------------------

Spent a little time lastnight fabricating a wiper motor cover:

And today I'm trying to get the raised bedfloor built and ready for wood. Seems to be moving along fairly easily...

I have to wait until next week to finish up under the hood. The guy helping me had some parts he was working on and I don't really understand what his plan was, so I'll post up pics when it's done.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

I finished up the raised bedfloor framing. All told, it took around 12hrs with several breaks and slackin off. 75dually - I switched it up a little so I didn't copy you! Haha

I also got a latch built and installed for the access door. Simple, but effective. I plan to connect a trunk solenoid so the door will flip up with a button...
