Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

I got some work done over the week end I finish up the D60 and installed it under the frame. I started to prep the engine to install it Sunday but I was missing 3 bolts 1 for the flywheel and 2 for the pressure plate. I found the blot for the flywheel after cleaning up my work bench but I had to buy 2 bolts of the pressure plate from Chevy this morning. so next week end I can install some wheel the motor, tranny and T-case. I would post picture but they are still working on my house repairing the water damage. so I could not get to my computer all week end.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

So your ord steering mount fits the crossmember just not the steering box mount area? That is opposite from mine. All the faith you will get it. It's looking good!!!

It don't fit the cross member either I just lined it up that way. the holes don't line up either top or bottom side to side. I will cut the bracket up and make it fit. A good cut off wheel and mig welder will do the trick.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Pictures of the steering gear brace after I cut it apart to fit my frame. I'm going to wait until I install the engine so I can check clearance for the fan and shroud.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

You are right, mine did fit better. Do you think you will have a problem with clearance with the motor? Now I am a little worried.

I should know after this week end. I'm installing the engine, trans and T-case. then install the core support, radiator and shroud to see how things fit.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Had a good week end got some work done installed the wheels and tires so I can roll it in and out of the garage. Installed the engine, transmission and T-case Saturday with some help from my nephew. Then we went to his shop and got my 1973 Plymouth Satellite running after 3 week not having spark we finally got spark. The engine still would not start. It ended up being I installed the spark plug wires on the distributor the wrong direction. fixed the wires and it fired up. Then after 2 minutes and 34 second of run time the transmission was puking oil we shut it down went and had some dinner came back a pulled the trans and it was the torque converter shaft was trashed where the oil seal rides. so I will call TCI Monday to see what can be done. Sunday I worked on the truck and installed the intake manifold, some brackets, headers and crossover steering link. I had to cut the front tube on both side of the headers so I can bolt them up and plan how to fix the front tubes. I was not able to find the body mounts in the attic so I was not able to work on the steering brace much.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Looking good. Too bad you had to cut the headers!!! Ouch I don't like to cut on expensive parts. Will the cab clear the engine and exaust where you have it?

I was wondering if you could measure from the front of the frame somewhere to the engine block? I want to get my crossmember installed but not sure of the exact measurement front to back.

From the right cylinder head to the front edge of the frame is 29-1/4". I did install my engine with the cab in place.

Center of core support mounting hole on frame to front of Dirty Dingo mount is 21-5/8". from the engine block under the water pump is 18-1/8". from center of hole to first bolt on engine motor mount is 24".

That stinks to hear about your trans seal issue in the Satellite. Hopefully they send you a new seal and there isn't an issue in the TC. Keep at it!

I have been sending TCI info this morning several time as the ask question. the front of the trans has 2 splines one larger and the smaller one at the front of the main shave. the TC only has the smaller spline. the back of the TC shows metal grinding inside and the larger spline on the main shaft shows grinding on the splines. it looks like they sent me the wrong TC. I bought it as a package deal even came with oil cooler and 3 gallons of oil.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like not a good deal. Hopefully they get you fixed up in short order.

Hey David
Was wondering what rear shocks you have? I have tough countries and they look long. Not to much travel installed. I have TC 61301.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration

Finally got the steering brace in order welded up painted and installed. The stock fan does not fit it clears the brace by 1/8". I will be going with electric fan set up now. I started on the headers this afternoon.

That stinks about the fan clearance, but oh well. It should be fine with an electric fan.

My shocks look good but I think they are way too long.
I probably should have ordered bilsteins also I have them in my 2008gmc 1 ton crew cab and love them.
The brace looks good. I am going to put electric fans also. My swap motor had electric fans from the factory.
