Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Won't these brakes cause pad knockback on the 12-bolt?

What do you mean by "pad knockback"?

This is when the rotor deflects slightly, pushing the pad and piston in with it -- the result is less braking power until the brakes are actuated again. This site does a good job explaining but seems to be missing illustrations:
http://www.stoptech.com/technical-su.../pad-knockback

On full-floating rears this isn't an issue, but with our 12 bolts there's some axle endplay that causes pad knockback. Floating calipers get around this with the ability to move with the hub. Fixed calipers like these do not. An alternative solution although not 100% effective is to use c-clip eliminators which hold the axle in place to a much greater degree.

So I guess the answer is that these calipers are ok if you are running c-clip eliminators.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Is this 'pad knockback' something you have experienced with your rear disc brakes? Did you purchase a set of these D52 brackets from me?

The D52 calipers are not solidly bolted to the caliper bracket. They do slide on the 'bolts' that connect them to the caliper bracket. Yes the axles in a semi floating differential do have some lateral movement. In a differential that is in good condition, that movement should be minimal. I have not had one complaint regarding 'pad knockback' from any of my 100+ customers that have bought any of my rear disc brackets.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

My bad, I saw the first brake pic and it looks like the willwoods have front and back pistons which would make it a fixed caliper! Since these are floating I surmise that they'd work well without the c-clip eliminators.

No. Those are the smaller Metric calipers. Only the '76-'79 calipers as stated in this thread.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

You wouldn't happen to have any pics of someone using this kit with a porterbuilt rear 4 link would you? I'm wanting to get a set of brackets but think I'm gonna have issues with the panhard bar bracket interfering with the caliper with my differential being narrowed 8.50 inches

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Sorry but no I do not. No one sends me pictures. All there are, are what you see in this thread.

What about moving the caliper to the front of the differential?

No worries. I can modify the bracket if push comes to shove. I could do that more than likely but the bars aren't much further inboard than the panhard bar bracket

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The inside surface of the caliper bracket will be 1-5/8" inside from the outside of the backing plate flange.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Got my "CaptainFab" brackets for my 69' stepside the other day. Machine work was excellent. I did not have any issues with fitment, everything lined up and went together perfect. Only issue I had was the pads were a little thick for the new rotors, I sanded the pads a little and caliper dropped in place then. Here is a couple of picks.....I put a coat of "POR" on the brackets....

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Ok thanks! Will do some measuring next time I'm out and I'll let you know. I think the brackets will fit but I'm. Pre worried about the calipers. I guess it all depends on how they will be clocked. I looked at the pics in the thread but it's hard to tell.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Sorry but no. If you are running stock Ford housing ends, just about everyone runs the Explorer rear disc assembly. If you are running a narrowed 9" with the correct Impala/truck housing ends, I have the correct base brackets that will retain the axle bearings and allow you to be able to run these D52 brackets.
