Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

You could have soaked them in brake cleaner. That will get the paint off the emblems. It will remove paint off of the fender by mistake it will at least remove the yellow off of the emblems. Just a thought. I had a friend a few years back rebuilt the master cly. on the front fender. It soaked thru the cover and ate up the blue metlic paint on his 57 chevy.
On a lighter note. I taped the bolts on the hinge and it worked out real sweet. Just make a mental note of that.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Thanks, guys. Yah, not many C20s being done. Sorta wonder how many are left, anyway. Between the two of us, Dean, we'll keep a couple of them from the scrapper for a while longer, if not on the road...

George, Patches is getting so close and looking really good. You must be really itching to get it on the road, eh?

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Well, tonight was supposed to be Mustard night, but turned into Taurus wagon night, as we apparently cracked the thermostat housing, and now it doesn't like to hold its coolant inside any more. Kind of a pain to get out, but what isn't on a later model front drive car?

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Yea I really am. I think I have burnt myself out on the truck. So I am taking a break on the truck. I did look up and see how hard it was going to be in installing the front windshield. It looks real easy. I might install it tomorrow. If I can find a friend to help, it is a two man job.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Taking a break is probably a good idea, George. You've come a long way with Patches. Just don't take a break as long as I did or you will forget where you put all of your parts, too...

Managed to get both fenders pretty much ready for full priming last night. I primed the outside of one of them a few weeks ago, which was a bit of a mistake, as I have been working on the inside of that one and scratching up hte primer on the outside, but oh well. Tried getting both of the inner-inner fender screws out of that fender last night to no avail. I ended up drilling and tapping new holes. Bondo'd the bumped out dent on the other fender and did some more final Bondo on that one, as well. Also drilled the holes under the side marker light for the 350 emblem. Which reminds me that I haven't pulled the Custom 20 emblems out of the ziploc yet to see how hte Goof Off wipes worked on the paint.

Plus, I bought two sets of sand blasting gloves. The set in the benchtop blasting cabinet is dry rotted, which is why I haven't used it. Plus, my little compresser didn't really keep up with it too well. Looking forward to using it again with the big compresser and my fancy new gloves.

I totally forgot to take any pictures, but it wasn't really exciting stuff, anyway. But, I did take a picture of some of the trim I've been working on for our stairway as proof of the other stuff that's been taking time away from Mustard. So there!

If you look out the window in the picture, through the red door (almost looks pink, but its not), take the door on the right, the fenders are back there in the wood shop. Heck, the rest of Mustard is just inside that red door!

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Got both fenders primed inside and out. It's finally warm enough ip here to do that in the ingested part of the garage, which is nice. Also got around to taking one of my Custom 20 emblems out of the goo gone wipe/zip loc application and clean it up. Seems to have worked pretty well, although I couldn't find my smaller brush for cleaning out the nooks and crannies as well as I would have liked.

Hoping to order some leaf springs this week some time, too.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Thanks, guys. Lawn mower is looking pretty spiffy, too, eh?

The fenders and emblems will be driver quality, but that's all I'm going for on this anyway. The primer didn't lay down that nice, actually, and had lots of bubbles in it. Fortunately it's just the primer, but I'll need to make sure to have the bugs worked out by the time I spray the paint on.

Is that primer 2K primer. You can sand out all the bad spots. good work on the fenders

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

It's nothing fancy, just some sandable primer I picked up at the Farm and Fleet store in the bigger town an hour away. It should sand out just fine, I think. Apparently it was a bit colder than ideal and/or I put it on too thick, as it was still really tacky this afternoon when I got home from work. It is still only in the 50s here, but I still thought it should have been dry by then. It'll be OK, though. I'm in no rush to move the fenders around any time soon, as the only plans for the rest of the week for Mustard include getting the leaf springs and associated hardware on order. $$$$$ After they get here, I'll get the Dana 60 back from one of my buddies, which will cost another few hundred, although he's gonna come over and help me put it in, more than likely. Then Old Mustard will be a roller again!!!

I can remember when I said I will have a roller again, but that was way back when. even at 50 that primer should have been dry ay now. the thicker the better. the more room you have to sand.

Re: 72 C20 "Old Mustard"

Well, the primer finally dried!!!!

And, my leaf springs came in. I staged them in a non-ceremonious spot under the back of the truck frame, which doesn't really do justice to the amount of time and "thinking" that went into their purchase. I didn't want to botch this like I did the Chevelle gas tank (which doesn't work with leaf springs). I'm still not convinced these will give the load capacity I want, so we'll see. If not, maybe there's a set of air bags in the future

Unfortunately, one of the daily drivers is going to suck up some of the "auto budget" for this month, so we'll see what's left for Mustard after that is done. Gotta have a driver.
