Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

Since the rainy season is fast approaching (got a little taste this week ), and I know this is not going to paint any time soon, I decided to put the rear glass in without sealant for now. Hopefully I'll be able to get it back out without damaging anything when it comes time for paint...

So I've had this custom quarter glass ready to go for a few months now. Sierra Glass in Hillsboro did a great job and gave me a lot of good advice. I also had all new seals ready to go. So today was as good a day as any...

Here's the glass (tempered and with the "bug" in the correct location):

For some reason these seals were a little too long... About 20"

So I had to do a little trimming (no room for mistakes at $150/pr!)

all trimmed without glass in:

Awesome work as always, . I'm missing my Burb already, . Oh, well. I think I have found 2 more projects here, .
Interesting that it may have been stamped that way. Well not anymore

I'm keeping the handle and push button. With the gass-struts you just open it as you would normally open the liftgate but take a step back because of the swing-up tailgate. It's not an awkward motion as I too imagined it might be. It's not much different from opening a new Tahoe/Burb hatch (though those handles are a bit lower).

It's still looking like I'll be enjoyin some green chillis with ya sometime in Sep. So I'll be in a similar boat as you, but I get weekends at home

Interested in what you might have dug up down there

I don't have many more mods to do. I can tell you what the next steps are (in no set order):
  • Temp floor and notch cover in back (will eventually be a modified truck bed wood kit)
  • Gas-Struts on hatch (need to relocate lower ball-studs)
  • Exhaust re-route (tucked up)
  • Truck style tail lights/gate (pic below)
  • 67-68 front clip
  • Wheel-well mods to accommodate 20/22's that are waiting to go on
  • Modify lower/side trim to fit
  • Complete all rust repair (yes it still has some but I have all the new sheet metal)
  • Disassemble/Paint/Reassemble
  • Interior to include molded fiberglass rear/side panels to accomodate my 12" JL's in rear corners (similar to the kick panels I made)
  • Drive and enjoy it

...and these are the Hart_Rod inspired tails/gate mod I'm planning. Very similar to his engenius execution (this chop is based on his pic), but I'm moving the lights slightly up/in and running no tail light trim:

Sheesh, is that all? One thing that stands out to me by its exemption, mods to the front clip. Sure, using the 67-68 clip is a mod in itself, but these were available those years and is kind of the "thing" to do now. You just have to come up with something better. I'm sorry, but after what you've done so far from the doors back, it just will not due to simply replace the front clip. I want more, expect more, dammit, we demand more . Oh yeah, don't forget the pictures.

You guys are fueling the insanity

Hgs: I hear ya. It won't be stock, but I do want to keep it simple. Maybe #4 from that link with turn sigs in the headlights. If I decide to run the bowtie later I can just glue it on. There's a slight temptation to do a smoothed out bumper, but then I'd have no choice but to smooth the rear one too

Re: Joined the Short Wheelbase Club *69 Tahoe Project*

I like em both, if it was my decision for doing it to my truck, it would probably come down to a coin toss! Actually, I already shaved the bowtie, so I suppose I know which one I like

So, either way, are you going to use the driving lights as driving lights with the turn signals in the headlights, or will you convert the bumper lights to turn signals? I was going to use a 71-72 bumper on mine, but the lenses are to big for my taste. I had thought about using one of those bumpers and making the driving lights the turn signals.

But again, either way will look killer!

I think there's a law in some states that says the turn signals have to be x-inches off the ground. Because of this I'm leaning toward doing the driving lights as driving lights with the turn signals in the headlights. I saw Brad's 67 last night at the PIR cruise in and he had some aftermarket H4 headlights with a blue bulb just below the H4 bulb. Looked like it could be easily replaced with an amber bulb and wired to be a turn sig

Now I just need to find out exactly what they were (he got them at a swap meet), and find a chrome shop that wants to sponsor the project

get the headlights with the LED's built in... the ones with the little wedge bulb like you say, the headlights really drown those bulbs out and make em hard to see blinking

You would have LOVED to pay the $660 for the factory painted projector beam headlamp assembly (dealer only)on my old 95 3000GT when some neighborhood punk-ass kid put a BB hole through the lens...
