Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

Love the C&C sticker on the inside of the door. Imagine someone opening that up in another 50 years!!

Great determination and fab work. Another great example of proving you don't have to have a lot of fancy equipment to get the job done!

Great progress! I can relate to your comment "much more work than the pics show".

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

49' yeah I put little signatures like that throughout the build! Sid, no doubt pics can't possibly show all the little things that go into the most basic looking session. You look at a car or truck and think, its not big, why does it take hundreds and even thousands of hours to build. Of course having a few nice good tools to help get things done faster sure does make life easier. I'm slowly getting those tools. Problem I have is several garages, so I need doubles of alot of tools or I have to pack it up and move it. Then keeping organized is insane.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

10-11 Hold back on the compliments of the pro paint booth! Gotta deal with what room I got. Finally got these parts in epoxy and then high build. Hoping to get paint on by monday. I got 41 hrs in redoing the doors, inner fenders, stripping, coating and priming these parts. Its put a healthy dent in my expected hours of completion. but... I wanted this done right. I'v gone about as far as I can go with future rust prevention. I'll prolly coat the exterior with something to preserve the patina as well.

I already got a strong idea on another build which sux, cause I got a few lined up. but I have the parts laying around and I want to put them to use. its a 1 piece windshield 5 window cab and its crusty. I think I'm gonna paint it, bag it and EFI it. but gotta finish this 49' first.

99, good to get stuff in epoxy and primer, then you don't have to worry about rust coming back. Looks good...Jim

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks jim, yeah I love epoxy. Oh I'll be installing bear claws possibly next weekend as well, they are showing up but not sure if I'll get them in or not. My goal was to do that this weekend bf I even did primer, I sure as heck hate to do it after paint, but I'd rather get paint laid before it gets too cold. thats why I'm rushing to get all this stuff ready rather than putting cab on and getting to things that will make the truck move on its own.

Looks good 99. I have some parts to get epoxy on too. Does the epoxy take longer to dry when the weather gets colder or ?

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

thanks guys, SID I believe the min temp on spraying probably anything is 65 deg. My first run with the epoxy was a year or so ago on a fender I fixed for another project I'm doing, I got the room up to almost 60deg and it sprayed really good. I think the colder it gets yeah it will def effect the adhesion and curing. the SPI I use has a recoat time of 7days. thats the longest I'v seen for an epoxy, so I think the temp is even more critical. hey how much was your back cab skin to ship???? might just get a new one for this 5 window cab.

AD, I got a 52' I'm painting for myself, a 53' belair for the fam that needs done. Both are huge projects. I got a 54' I gotta do for a guy and I know there has been another build I wanted to do in between all of these and sell. So since I'v had the 5 window cab for so long I figure I can work on it over the winter, maybe do up the suspension. Its all just a new plan in my head, just gonna be alot of bouncing around. Here is the cab, its rough, dash is rough so I will be a good reason to do a dash swap. also doing a 47-53 grille

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

10-13 Mon. Wrapping up some more paint. So instead of doing a contrast with the gold and white with a black, I went with a metallic rootbeer. Pretty happy so far, so once its all together I guess I'll know if I need to make any changes. The wheel I want white, the last pic you can see is the steering column, so hopefully that looks good together.

The doors, windshield trim and headliner trim is rootbeer. I still have to touch up some door jams as I'll be installing bear claws. Hopefully I don't ruin all my hard work. I got 45 hrs in doors, trims and inner fenders. Thats metal work to paint.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

couple more. I'm thinking a lighter wood stain and the darker trim will be cool.
I have the bottom door hinge cover painted and the window trim, just no pics yet. I'll be making a vinyl door panel for the factory location.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

Looks awesome 99!

I got my back cab panel from LMC. Not sure on shipping as I spent over $1000 in order to get free shipping.

Reason I ask about temp and paint is I have to get my frame in epoxy and paint inside the frame rails before I box it in. Wondering if it's that critical for inside the frame rails. Maybe I should ask in the paint section.

Keep up the good work.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

sid, Id just get some heat in the garage and heat up the frame, just cause its 60 in the room doesn't mean the metal is. You could just coat the inside frame rails with some chassis saver/por15 then box it in. I find it easier to just brush sections on, than to set up for spraying and then cleaning it all up. If you have your frame all stripped and ready to coat then spraying would be much faster.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

AD thanks hopefully this all comes together well, may have to repaint a few things if I don't like how it jives with the rest of the interior. the seat and door panels will really set it off, so I got to nail those.

as for paint, this is only a few times of me painting. not including primer. its just single stage metallic, which metallics are a bit harder to work with. its like anything else with cars, just gotta get in there in do it once you know the basics. then you can fine tune. I want to build a pain booth though, its not ideal painting in the area you do everything in. my garage is 18x24 so its a tight squeeze and overspray lays everywhere.

Awesome job. Love the paint colors. I will be watching for pics of your bear claw install as I am trying to decide on that as well for mine too.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

10-20 mon Didn't get as much work in this weekend. Had to do alot of weatherizing. Anyway, jumped back onto the frame to button some things up. Should have cab on next weekend. Long over due! I got rotors, redid some air line location up front, still not final. Got exhaust on. Driverside is a real pain because the header comes down so much farther than the pass side. I just have some clamps on them as opposed to getting stainless wire to weld it on. I like the fact of removing things in pieces if need be. Still need to run some hangers.

Got rad brace back on, got to get rad hoses for final fit. Started the long overdue shock brackets, hoping to get that done next weekend.

I got bear claws in, I'll get to them and some final paint after I get more done with the drivetrain. I need a driveshaft and to hook up pedals and steering. Ran fuel and brake line. just need to button them up. I got stainless brake hoses for front and real, running all copper nickel line. Fuel is all aluminum with rubber ends. Still have to get sending unit for tank.

ordered up some nice calipers, need brake MC and clutch MC still.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

here's the claws. ebay purchase I was pretty pissed about. got them off a site that said they were johnny law brand (I know prolly nothing special) then they come in autoloc packaging. I never wanted autoloc and really didn't want to support them. but the price was hard to beat, so if they don't work out I can always replace them, no big deal. I just got the whole kit even though I'm fully capable of fabbing up my own, I just really need to start shaving off some time since I have a crap ton of work still to do. I really am cutting it close to have this truck done by end of Jan for the pittsburgh autorama. I got these bc they are the locking style. I want to try to incorporate my door handles with these.

99, chassis looks great, nice job. Sorry about the latches, from what I know Johnny Law is part of Hoffman group (autoloc). I've never had any luck with there stuff, and had to replace everything. Hope you have better luck...Jim

I agree 99, chassis is looking good. Nice progress. Hope the latches don't give you problems.

This is an opportunity to express my opinion of The Hoffman Group and Johnny Law. Quality of parts sold and Customer Service are both questionable.

Re: 49' Patina bagged in PA

10-25 Finalized my shock mounts. Should have done it bf I coated frame, but got a head of myself. Anyway, just about everything I looked up on doing shock mounts had sketchy at best descriptions. So I did up this how to, or atleast how I did it. Since you can't read it on here. I'll put it up on my website.

I'm planning on getting cab on tomorrow and working on steering and pedals. Might just make my own brake pedal. Might just order a wilwood clutch. Found a really good driveshaft on ebay, so I'll order that up once I get brakes, cab and clutch hooked up. If I can drive this out of the garage by the 19th of nov, I'd be a happy man. the 19th of november last year is when I got the body off frame and into garage.
