Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

that could be
but i have been jumping it with my truck.. when i starts to get low
i got the bat on a charge right now.

aand the starter hasn't really given us that much grief.
would it be worth it to pull my HEI and put it in this car to see if that would help?

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Pretty cool. Looks like you got a whole car family there. You have been doing nice work.

About the inline you are working on now. Take it slow and check your work. Did you pull off the timing cover and check the gears? With some of the problems you are having, pull off the side covers and check the puch rods. You should be able to rotate them slightly with the valve closed, if not, the rockets are too tight.

Next is the ignition. If you at TDC on #1 and have the rotor pointed dead at that cyl to fire, that is a 0 degree advance. I do not know any engines that run at 0. That is also why you get a backfire through the carb. The mix is igniting too soon and the intake valve is still open. That would indicate the timing should be retarted.

Lastly, how did you unstick the valves? If you left the head assembled and cleaned them that way, they may not be sealing. If you dissasemble the heads, clean and slightly polish the valve stems, and have the valve seats checked (make sure none are loose or are not allowing the valves to close because of the heavy carbon deposits [the junk you found at the top of the pistons]) that would ensure the head is good to go. You may not need to do all of this, but if you do, now you know.

Just keep up the good work. The good thing is you have a few projects, if you get too frustated with this engine, spend some time on the truck, or suspension on the car, or whatever. Just take a break from it for a little bit. Think about the problem and do a little research and attack it again with a cool head.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Alright guys problem solved
this morning i went out and tired to see if i had compression with that gauge we rented. test the first valve nothing no reading. i thought the gauge was bad.. tested another plug nothing... so i tought about looseing up the valves. turned them once around and tested again compression... somthing was wrong with the way the book was telling me to set my rockers. they said crank them till you can't spin the rocker in your hand then one more crank around...

well set the timing with the light based on the harmonic balancer and bang it fired right up... wwwwwwwwwooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooo !!!!!

lots of time wasteeed.. cause i dont have a compression gauge. but all good in the end. my cousin and i where just driving it and it runs alright burns a fair amount of oil but not bad ahaha.. oil change is next on the list.

thats all for now

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

so now im wondering what is the right way to tune the valves if the book was wrong.

and the parking brake works so im gonna pull the master cylinder off and rebuild it. or see what is wrong with it.

thing drives and stops with the parking brake.

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

oh yes and i am also wondering what trans is in this old girl
cause unfortunately it is not original. It has D-2-1 when you shift it on the column. but i haven't got it up to speed to see how many gears the trans actually runs threw.
no way it could be a 2 spd power-glide... did gm make another 3 spd power-glide that this motor would have been bolted up to. or could this be a turbo or r4. numbers i should look for??

I also read that the old stove-bolt 235's, and this 3rd gen 6 (230) have different bell housings is that true?

Re: Project' 69 c10 aka sin.

Hey guys.
My old man is really warming up to this car..
Bringing back some memories he had of his dads 64 impala.
So he decided to get a new set of rims and tires, new used where going to get them now.
Also we replace one line on the rear that was bad, and now the master cylinder is all torn apart I think we need a new one.
But all is good with the 230.
Can't wait to get the rims.. Hope you guys like them.

Oh yeah and I've Bren looking for a 283 I think that it would be a cool motor for our collection being the blueprint for all small blocks.

No updates on the truck haven't really been workin on it much. should start on the bed soon and get that done so i can haul some dirt bikes this summer.
Ill have some updates on it this weekend. or monday. Edit.. the car had a nice rubber mat in it thats about all i have done put that mat in the truck. looks nice and keeps the flooors clleaan.

As for the car. its still running finally changed the oil on it. haha the filter was a mess because we had to tare it aprat to get it off hah. seems like that 230 eats alot of gas tho idk what would cause that.
