Re: Project Sketchy Deal

I would be pissed if they took the VIN tag.
I hope things work out for you.

They just looked at the vin plate on the door jamb and the mileage on my gauge cluster which was not installed. I had to show them where the Vin plate was .. They dont bother with frame Vin just the cab/body Vin in Oklahoma. I hope you get this sorted out and get to enjoy the truck. I really wish all 50 states would get on the same page with title work on thses old trucks, and with all the silly business perhaps maybe a required Vin inspection prior to selling so this crap doesn't happen. Must be a green conspiracy to melt down our classics and turn them into Prius-es.
I think you have a good idea about checking the vin prior to selling a vehicle and not far off on the green thing.

The trooper realizes that it was an assembled vehicle but Kansas laws tied his hands.

Too be honest I'm glad they didn't impound the truck.

I really appreciate all the support. Thanks everyone.

I am at a loss as to why an inspection was required in the first place. Was the title from another state? Texas is not nearly as complicated.

Yes, I bought the truck in Missouri. The Show Me state. My story is a bit confusing and definitely dubious.
In Kansas when you purchase a vehicle from another state you have to have the vin # inspected before you can title it in your name.

Re: Project Sketchy Deal

well i guess your inspector was being alittle bit more thorough with your inspection. i bought my 72 in oklahoma and had the sheriff's department do my inspection when i brought it home and they just checked the title to door jam and mileage. hopefully it all works out for you

Wow.. I'm glad Vermont doesn't have laws like that. To register this truck in Vermont, you would only need a bill of sale. We don't even have titles for vehicles that old.

Re: Project Sketchy Deal

I am currently running into the same problem.

When I bought my truck out of colorado, it had a clean title that matched the vin plate on the body.

Take it to the inspection station only to have them search around under it for 45 minutes before they find a frame VIN (luckily not stolen)

They gave up after that and told me about the quiet title stuff.... The whole thing is kinda BS and sketchy.

They are absolutely no help at the inspection station. One would think that if we had to go through all of this crap to jump through THEIR hoops, they would at least throw us a bone beyond "go find a lawyer, and pay a lot of money"

I'm not sure I get the metaphor.
I started this thread as a project build thread.
The situation worsens the further I get into the legality of registering the truck.

For those that are still confused google ksa 8-116
I don't know how to link the site with an IPad.

Is the truck for sale with a bill of sale? I have a restored 71 GMC swb step that I might be interested in taking your truck as partial trade. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/c...p?product=5529

I'm not a subscribing member at the moment so I can't post a for sale ad.

Is the truck a 67 or 68? Or 68 1/2 since it has rear markers but no fronts... Or is it neither? Haha

Just checked back in. Sorry to here that, AL is probably one of the easiest states there is to trade old vehicles. Best I remember, below 75 and sll you need is a bill of sale. Could be wrote on a scrap piece of paper an still be good. Hope it works out. I'm sure the VIN and truck are in the system now. If you don't title it will they let you sell it in another state?

Yep, any old scrap piece of paper stating buyer, seller and discription is all we need here in AL for vehicles 25 years or older. I guess we try to make things easy around here. There are not many tree hu@#%$ here.

Do your vin plate #'s match the frame? Perhaps they checked it and you were not aware, if not, count yourself lucky!

I grew up with fields of cotton everywhere. Now all those fields are full of pine trees. Makes hunting Bambie a little harder.

Re: Project Sketchy Deal

Update: court date for the new title is August 14th. I hope I filed everything correctly.
Anyway I purchased an late 80s/early 90s 5.7 with a serpentine set up. At first I was going to remove it and go with an original look but changed my mind. Keeping the serpentine stuff. I listed the 307 on craigslist hoping it would sell(actually was wanting to trade for some snap on or Mac stuff) before I did the swap.
No bites and I'm getting antsy. Probably swap engines late this week.
I have drop springs and lowering blocks for the back but I'll be looking for drop springs for the front soon.

Re: Project Sketchy Deal

that is strange why the frame needs to match the tags on the cab? or did I read that wrong?

I just swapped out my frame, so they wont match. I also filled in any remaining numbers as well.
