in my case, i was mainly looking for an original short bed truck. after much searching, i happened to find one in kansas. after i got it, i started liking the 67-68 front ends more. i really do like the taller hood of the 69-72, but i'm not thrilled with any of the grille options. i was just going to stick with my 69 clip but i happened to find another guy in kansas off craigslist that was looking for a 70 finder. it turns out, he agreed to swap complete front clips with me. i figured i couldn't pass that deal up.

Ya mine has a 72 front clip...a 67 cab ( has small window so assume it's a 67)...a 68 frame and is titled a 68 with a 68 door vin tag....I'm changing the front clip back to a 68, and will call it a 68..although I know I'll get asked about my small window. Oh well..

I'm looking for a cab for my 69 with a 77 engine and at this point don't know what I'll wind up with. I'm also looking to swap the drums to disk and do some other modifications as I try to fix it up.

As I mentioned above, a lot of people do these type of swaps and it shouldn't be a big deal to tell people that ask what's been done. In your case a 67 cab with parts from other years. Simple as that.

"What year Suburban is that, a '72?"

"Naw, its a '70 but sometime in the past someone must have hit a deer with it or something along those lines because its got a '71-'72 front end on it. They had to replace the fenders, hood, grille and bumper."

That's how it went down and its how I explain it.

Like I said earlier, it seems that everyone asks if its a 72. Should just say "Nah it's an 04." and walk away.

Well, I never considered it until you brought it up but...I always say '70 with a '71 grille. I guess I do this because I don't want someone to think I'm an idiot who doesn't know what year his own truck is HAHA.

Re: what year do you call your truck with a diff clip?

I would tell people the actual year with whatever grille,if that's all that's different. Or,whatever year with '67 clip and bedside markers filled, etc. But,that said,I am calling my project a '67 GMC Super Custom because that's what I'm building it to be. I have gathered '67 GMC (even Super Custom) parts from Grille, fenders, hood, buckets, steering wheel, doors, door handles (inside & out),tailgate, emblems, reverse lenses, steering wheel/horn button, vent windows, interior mirror...and a 327 because that's what a late '67 GMC could have. But...it's built from the ground up and that makes a difference.I am building the truck to be a '67 GMC Super Custom using a '71 frame,'72 cab,'68 engine, and a '65 GTO transmission. Any expert would see the discrepancies in the cab instantly. Most likely when it's done and I'm driving it I will answer,"I built it to be a '67 GMC,but it's made up from various years". Just like if you built a '32 Ford Coupe from new parts. There may not be a part on it from '32,or even a Ford, and it'll be titled the year it was registered, but you gotta call it something. The fact is,when you build it from the ground up you either call it what it looks like or what the title says. As far as the DMV goes it's whatever the title says. As far as selling it goes,it's time to tel exactly what you did. It's hard to say what to put in the heading of an ad. I'd probably go by the title and the first thing I'd say in the description is explain what's what. Or maybe,"If you're looking for an original truck, better keep looking"

Mine will sound like Johnny Cash's "One piece at a time" when it's done LOL. Frame will be a 78, cab 72, front end and bed 67, seat 70, engine hopefully 96, transmission and transfer case 81, will be titled as 72 so that's what it'll be!

I would agree with this if you were buying a complete, restored truck. Why take apart a good truck?

But if you want a nice driver or truck to restore, I'd get a 71/72 and put a 67/68 clip on it. Most 67/68's were low option bare boned trucks. By 71/72 trucks were becoming more of what they are today, as in, people drove them because they were cool, and not just use them for work, so while most 67's barely had heaters, most 72's had V8s, automatics, power disc brakes, A/C, and some pretty cool trim lines.

Plus, 67/68's are dead sexy and were only a 2 year run, while the 69-72's only need a simple grill swap to resemble another year (like a 69 into a 72)

I would tell people whatever year it appears to be and if it were for sale I'd put the correct year and mention that it had a whatever year front clip on it.

Of course, I've also had people tell me that I was wrong on what year my truck is (and it is a 100% 67 small window C-10) yet, I'm wrong on what year it is I was told once "my dad had a '74 just like that" I usually try to be polite and say, "that's cool man."

Maybe once . My truck is not 100% original. I was just feeling a little ornery, and thought I would throw that in the mix.

At least calling a 67 a 72 is in the ball park. I've had my truck "mistaken" for some odd year square body more times than I can recall, but they all swear dad or grandpa had one just like it

My favorite is when I get, "Hey man, nice 67!" I love that. It's either a damn good guess or they actually know what they're talking about

Re: what year do you call your truck with a diff clip?

I've thought about this, too. My frame is a '69 SWB but the cab is from a '72 Cheyenne Super LWB. I have the Super side markers on it, 5 lug conversion, and 72 grill and front bumper. It's titled as a '69, even though I haven't swapped the '69 VIN plate onto it.

I'm not sure which way to go. The parts truck was a '72 Cheyenne Super LWB but it's on a '69 SWB frame. I could register it as the '72 (because the '72 VIN plate is still on it) but I also have the body plate from the '69 SWB in a bag. Thing is, if I go with the LWB VIN it's immediately not correct. But, it doesn't look like a '69.

Chinese finger torture!

For now, I've been calling it a '72 because that's what it looks like.

It's a lot easier to change the front clip on a 72 than to put disc brakes power steering and 5 lug wheels and such on a 67

I still get asked what year my truck is, despite the plate.
