Dont bash the 305. A different set of heads, good intake and cam designed for the 305 and it will surprise you.

That is to bad, I would build a 307 over a 305 anyday, oh well time to start looking for at least a 350.

Yes a 305 will surprise you !!! I have ran a 305 sprint car class racing on dirt!!!
283 power pack heads have a 50cc chamber and some big values good steel crank and a nice set of rods !!! It will move and do it in a quick manner!!!

I could get 7300 rpm's out of it!! Hilborn injection though ! But that was with a value rule in affect !! So better springs it would probably do a lot more !!

Yes but what did it cost to get that much out of that motor? The local pick-a-part has 26 5.3 liter Vortec engines complete with computers ranging between $950 7 $1300.00 with mileage between 36,000 and 98,000 miles. You would be hard pressed to build that 305 starting with the block the original poster has for less than $2000.00 so , while you are right, you can make one run it just doesn't add up financially!

I bought a 2003 5.3 for $550 complete. Admittedly im am LS addict, but a 5.3 plus cam, carb, 6LS MSD controller, and carb intake will run great. Even bolts up to TH350/400/glide if you're so inclined. The small block had a great 50 year run....but its day as the budget powerplant of choice is nearly over.

Going fuel injection is great, but does increase complexity and cost. I'm a huge fan of EFI, but I realize its not for everyone.

I've been pondering scoring a set of 305 vortec heads and injection set-up to drop on the 307 in the '70 C10. There's got to be someone who has done it. I think the larger bore on the 307 will flow good (unshrouds the valves) and a short stroke should rev up nice, but with nice, efficient breathing make decent torque with an RV type cam. Nothing exotic, just trying to use what I've got and can get. This one's not going to the hot-rod truck- getting a '68 GMC to do that to.

If you want to do something a little different, maybe put together an old 283 or 327 with factory parts and fresh internals.

The great thing of a small block Chevy is there are cheap parts out there and you can make it into anything you want. But, if you want the most HP get a four bolt 350 so you maximize the power and minimize the cost. If you already have a 305 or 307 then add what it needs
