LOL! In New Mexico it was a PITA educating the DMV reps about YOM plates. The upswing of that is they have no idea what plate is correct for what. As an example, a member here with a 68 stamped NM plate will almost certainly be able to register it for his 68 pickup despite the fact it's for a trailer home ("T") and 65 stamped plates were in use for pass vehicles through 1971. I have truck stamped turquoise NM plates on my K5 and K20 but ran a 72 passenger plate on my old K10. In MT (you need matching plates here front/rear) I expected the same - was wrong. They're savvy here - I couldn't use a 70 white/green plate set for the K1500 correct for my county (#7) despite the fact the embossed year is covered by the registration tag. I had to use the white/blue correct for 71-72 but didn't need to have county correct plates.

GA is the same. They don't care about the alpha-numerics, just the year. As long as I have the blue/white 70 plate, I could run a bus plate or a car from Savannah. I may have to get over the letters and numbers too.

Re: Build Date Question

If you run into a 1970 St.Louis built Chevrolet while you're home for Thanksgiving..please don't forget to snap a pic of that blue door jam sticker...I sure would be thankful if you did.

Thanks,

Brad

This probably won't be much help, rough condition and a GMC but I'm pretty sure it says 1/70. My NP 205 tag is 8-69. Truck has been Mom's or mine since early 1971.

No, I think that is useful...and thanks for sharing. Though the GMC serial number might not give us any insight with regard to my build date, the fact that it was a Jan 1970 St. Louis truck and you've got a transfer case #...it may still give us a clue. I haven't gotten my TC back from the transmission shop yet, so I haven't been able to get a pick of my date tag...but we might be able to infer some things from yours.

It's hard for me to tell because of the size of the pic, but is your TC date tag 8-69 or 12-28-69? It would add to the discussion about TC tags and build dates.

Thanks,

Brad

Hello Brad, glad you find this useful. I'm embarrassed about my vision and memory again!-LOL! Here is a better pic of the t-case tag. The previous pic is an older one. Your thought was sure closer than mine as it is dated 12-23-69.

Re: Build Date Question

This confirms the MM/DD/YY format on a t-case date code vs the stickers MM/YY. As I originally stated we then have roughly a two week window every month where both tags would match in regards to MM and YY. This tag being a late 12/69 (just before Christmas break) with a 1/70 build on the sticker are exactly as expected.

Re: Build Date Question

That's awesome. I wish I had my TC back so I could check the date. But that is really a lot to go on. 12/23 on th TC and a Jan build decal on a St.Louis build.

Re: Build Date Question

OK...my transfer case build date was 1/13/70....which kind of muddies the waters as much as it clears anything up. Wouldn't it have been nice if it had been two weeks earlier...still need those VINs guys...thanks.

I've actually been wondering if there are any '70 Jimmy's with a '69 build date.

Sure there are.

Looks like around 40,000 or so (just considering the ones from St Louis); three of which are represented in this thread.

Why were you wondering?

Interesting question! If you are asking about the GMC "Jimmy" (XX15514 utility models) and not GMC "CKs" as a group.

Keith, You have me puzzled.
The only GMC Jimmy I see here is 70gmcjimmy's @ 62306 with a 01/70 build.
Since the seperately sequenced 70 GMC production started at 50001, that makes it about 12,305 off the line of all GMCs "CKs" built in St Louis to that point for the 1970 MY.
From that it is impossible to tell how many were the "Jimmy" utility vehicle.

Re: Build Date Question

Oops; I was thinking Blazer/Jimmy as a whole and didn't make a distinction between Chevy and GMC.

Sorry 'bout that.

(By the way, this happens all the time here at work. Someone will make a statement and someone else will reply..." that's Escalade. We're talkin' about Denali". Oops.)

In any event, I don't know why there wouldn't be, as I'm not aware of any specific work stoppage or stop order for GMC. During the squarebody era approximately one out of every nine vehicles was a GMC nameplate.

(backs away slowly) - Carry on....

Re: Build Date Question

No problem it was early for both of us.

Just trying to sort things out so everyone in on the same page.

Agree that it does look like they were a normal release for 70 being presented in the 7-69 dated GMC Four Wheel Drives brochure.
If vancelot69 wants to dig more into this it needs to be a sperate thread though.

Work... I'd love to spend a few days shadowing you there! :-)

Good info, thank-you! I was reluctant to even post that info due the the Blazer specific question of this thread.

All info is good, but that probably doesn't get me closer. What I think might be circumstantially helpful from you St.Louis GMC guys, is your component dates + door sticker MM/YY. If you've got a January or February St. Louis GMC, I would be interested to see the time relationships between your instrument cluster or transfer case and the door sticker....but thanks for posting. I'm just glad the thread is getting to the top. The more eyes on it, the better shot I have of finding some January or February trucks.

Re: Build Date Question

To help verify guage cluster being og to you truck there is usually a number in grease pencil that matches one sometimes written and engraved in fire wall in heater blower area. Kieth Seymore might be able to help with this one. That number pops up repeatedly on parts of the truck.

Exactly...it's the build sequence number and mine was 482. We found it on the cluster, core support and firewall.

If the build seq. is actually in numerical order maybe that number would help pin point it. It's odd my seq. # is lower than yours but my vin is higher?!?

Thanks for the info. As you can see from what we've gathered, a March build date makes sense with a 155XXX.

"The full build sequence number just keeps climbing all model year as vehicles are built, but in this way you could be building vehicle 901, 902, 903, 904 etc. one day and then 001, 002, 003, etc the next. (Full sequence would be 299901, 299902, 299903, 299904,etc; 300001, 300002, 300003, etc)." --Keith Seymore from the above thread on grease pencil marks.

...and the build sequence number obviously does not correspond to your VIN. Keith is a great resource and that thread is a fun read.

I have thought about that. It probably won't be done in January (if for no other reason the seat covers won't be done)...but February is a distinct possibility...but we're in no rush. It would be a nice 45th birthday present for her. 45 is the new 35 right?
