Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Hi everyone! I'm a new member here to the board, but have been surfing around on here for quite a while. I just thought it was time to join. Great place by the way, VERY helpful. I'll post a pic of my 6 as soon as I can figure out how.

Hey Botietruck, are those stock compressor brackets? If not, where did you find them? I've got the whole a/c system minus the brackets. They're a beast to find for a six cylinder!

Ok. Think I got it figured out. Here's my 6 banger:

Thinking about putting in a comp cam for the choppy idle and split headers. Maybe a 2bbl intake too.

I have an extra one of these, and wouldn't mind putting one in a C10 one day. It would be different, and they really wind up!

Not trying to be the dummy here, and I can see it is a straight 6, but which engine is this and who makes it?

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

I love this thread.

I have a 64 I bought a while back that I think I will keep the rest of my life. We've been through a whole lot together, and nobody's gonna want to pay what that's worth to me anyway. If you want the whole story read the thread in my sig.

I did my first engine swap in this truck. Went from the 230 (plum full of stop leak) to a later model 250 with only 40k miles. Sold the power steering off it for more than I paid for the engine. The fancy little chrome air cleaner bit the dust after an engine backfire early on so I'm running the stock air cleaner now.

Old:

None:

New:

Having some intermittent issue with it over the past couple of days. I've daily driven it the past couple weeks while a friend borrows my car. It has been cutting off on me at stoplights occasionally and is really difficult to get restarted. Backfired on me twice just humming down the interstate at 60mph, constant rpm, which it's never done. I think it's timing. I noticed last night I could see the exhaust glowing red under the floor through one of my rust holes. (One clear pro to having holes in the floorboard). Gotta be running too lean. I know I have (at least one) vacuum leak, too, but that can't be it, can it?

I will always keep the inline 6, would love to do an Offy 4bbl intake or even a 3x1bbl some day. Need a choke BADLY in the wintertime.

Not as common as the Chevy, so don't feel like a dummy. This is an overhead cam inline from my 67 Pontiac Tempest. They made a Sprint version with a 10.1 compression head. It also had a four barrel and split dual exhaust manifold. They only made them for a few years.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

So I finally drove my truck to work 2 days in a row. 11 miles one way. Running alil rough. So we put new spark plugs, cables, distributor cap. It has points. When running the inline six 250 we removed #3 spark plug cable and it seems to not react. Could this be a valve problem? All the rest of the react normally.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

So while I was at work a mechanic that sold my dad a 63 nova back in the 80's came over and checked out my truck. My dad told me the mechanic said that there is nothing wrong with the lil sixer. Just needs some kind of liquid?? put into the gas tank?? Also what gas should I use. I been putting in regular.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Update I went and filled up my tank and upgraded from regular-87 to special-89. Maybe I should start using High fuel next. Also added the Chevron fuel cleaner. I just want to keep my lil sixer going for a year or so before I have it rebuilt. But before that I want to throw on a Hei distributor.

Post Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

It needs no fuel additives .

Is it still running rough ? .

You can test the plug wires with a test light if you have one .

The HEI from any old 1975 ~ 1987 GM L6 is a direct drop in , you'll need to grab the whole Magilla , dizzy , cap , rotor , wires , power wire with correct end , unwrap the harness and get it all the way back to the firewall .

The power from your keyswitch now , is reduced to run the points so you'll need to provide a 12 V power source to run the HEI , it needs heavier wire too as it draws a fair bit of power .

The Long Beach Veterans Stadium Swap Meet always has HEI dizzies for your engine brand new ~ I trust GM's old stuff moreso than I do new Chinese but the new stuff is often far cheaper than buying all you'll need @ Pick-A-Part .

My 66's 292. 147K on it...48 years old completely stock internally...clifford intake and headers...600 cfm Edelbrock and HEI with 65K coil. Cold compression is 95 pounds in all cylinders. Not super fast, but good torque monster and fun little engine. Picture and video.

Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

Just put my 250 all back together this afternoon after buying a new exhaust manifold and painting up my intake.

On a side note, does anyone know what the connection in the 2nd picture is for? I managed to knick it while reinstalling the the manifolds. I presume it's something to do with coolant?

Question Re: Post Your Straight Six Pics!

? what pic. Mike ? .

Need to see to answer your question .

Did you buy one of the new Chinese made exhaust manifolds ? I bought one for my old '76 GMC 2500's 292 and it fit *perfectly* and had NO quality issues ! .

Is up now, sorry. It was from summit racing in the US, I believe it's American made. I was advised against buying anything offshore.
