Re: My Z'ed 81

damm a 4.5"z is too much, 2.5 will lay the cross member even with the frame, anything past the 2.5 or 3 will just hurt the amount of lift and that can cause some clearance issues if you run big wheels

Re: My Z'ed 81

The way I decided on the 4.5" was when completely deflated on my old setup, 4" would lay rocker and I added .5" just for good measure. Also, I cut the bottom of the frame flush with the bottom of the cab. If I have any issues I'll figure it out as I go. I think I am going to go ahead cut rockers off too and bodydrop it the rest of the way.

cool, thats what i went thru with mine, i did a 3" z and it layed pinch, but i wasnt happy with how much wheel it tucked so i did a 3 1/2" body channel and cut almost all the rockers off, now it tucks perfect

Yep, that's the ideal stance I am going for. If I could just get enough time to work on it.

Re: My Z'ed 81

No updates at the moment. I have only been doing a little bit here and there. Life has kind of happened so the truck is on hold. All I need is a wiring harness to put it back together. I am also trying to talk my dad into buy a plasma cutter with me, haha. I may go to the Nats if I think about it. I was thinking I had not seen your blazer before.

Re: My Z'ed 81

I think this thread deserves an update.

My wife got me the wiring harness for Valentine's day and I am just getting around to installing it now. The front clip is on and wired. Next is to finish the engine bay wiring and get the motor put back together. I think I have a photo or two I can post.

Re: My Z'ed 81

Since you bumped it I will go ahead and give a little update. Sorry, no pics yet but they will be soon. I moved to western NC and was able to find a place with a garage so now my truck is with me after 3+ years. I should have it done by April.

I still have not got it wired. I am not the best with wiring so I am taking my dear time. I did get the high beams to work but the lows did not, haha. I thing I have that figured out though.

I got the inside and out finished on the floor pan. There was some cutting, hammering, bending, seam sealer, rubberized undercoating, and flat black paint involved. I also go the firewall where it will stay for now, but the battery needs to be mounted and I will probably put it where the blower fan used to be. After this long, my Die Hard went into my dad's truck where it was needed more but got sold with that truck so now I need to get a battery too.

The steering proved to be easier than I expected. I got a Grand Am two joint steering shaft off ebay and with some cutting and welding made it work. This required cutting mine and putting varies components of the two together.

My next hurdle is still that stinking wiring. I also need to figure out what I want to do about a gas tank. My brother helped me put all the brake lines back on but after over 2 years of sitting outside, mud-dobbers made the line solid, haha. Should have known.

I was considering cutting the rocker off but then reality hit, haha. My truck is already painted and I was not up to fixing any body work. Its a hard color to match. Plus, I need to save something for retirement or my son should I have one.

Re: My Z'ed 81

Some updated photos. The way it sits is pretty much thrown together for the trip across the mountain. I have been trying to situate the garage for working but its been too cold for me to stay out there long.

Re: My Z'ed 81

UPDATE: I am so close I can smell it!

So I have finally tacked the wiring. I got the column and ignition soldered up and everything appears to be working. Last night I dumied up the guage cluster and all seems to be working with it too so I will solder it up some time this week.

Next I think I am going to tackle the air ride stuff. This time around I am going to mout the tanks, compressor, and solenoids together in the be so it will be easier to access them.

After that, I am going to finish putting the engine bay back together and ready for cranking. I do need to get some kind of exhaust together since I have it in an apartment complex.

In the meantime, I will be tightening up some bolt and getting the interior back in it.

I am also doing some routine maintenance on the motor since its been awhile that it has been on the road.
