There's also no way I'm putting it back together with a broken bearing cage. My luck is that it would fall apart the first time I drive it. These things are (insert a lot of bad words here) nightmare to take apart. If I put it back together it's going to be with new parts

I found another place that specializes in GM columns and sent them an email on the bearings. With as many as these things are rebuilt, I can't believe this isn't "common knowledge".
What about packaging all your parts up and sending them to KevsClassics? I know it would be a bit like giving up and i Know you are a pretty big do it yourself guy. But Kevin is just about the best in the business and you would end up with a GM column thats very safe.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

Stick with an oem column even if it cost you more money. I put a CPP chrome tilt in my friends truck and if you ask me it's a piece of crap. I wouldn't have one if they gave it to me for free!

I had Les "70ShortFleet" rebuild mine and he did a magnificent job at a very fair price.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

Use a van column. Very easy to adapt, OEM GM quality, way less $$ than an aftermarket column.

72-80 (or so). As long as it doesn't have the key in the column.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

I used a CPP unit. The shift lever was a little loose however it functioned perfectly. I would not hesitate to use one again.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

It makes me wonder... if the bearings I'm trying to find are so "unavailable", what the heck is being "rebuilt" in these $$$$$ OEM rebuilds??? New upper and lower bearings and a paint job?

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

I copied this from an ad..... but you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Note the ad states bearings were cleaned , checked and re-lubed....

Column was completely disassembled. all metal parts bead blasted, external parts were etched primed then painted semi-gloss black. housing bolts have been lock-tited to not come loose. bearings have been checked & re-lubed. new ac delco turn switch.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

For aftermarket columns, Flaming River is "The Man". It's what they do and have done for longer than CPP has existed. We have a vendor here who has Flaming River set them up to bolt directly in.

Geez...I hope nobody here thought they were getting anything other than a new paint job on a "rebuilt column". There is hardly anything in the column that "needs rebuilt" other than a little cleaning and new grease on those pivot cup bearings.
Upper and lower bearings? That takes all of 30 minutes to inspect or replace. Looks like there is good money to be made in cleaning up columns...
Now for a column that is loose side to side or up and down...the fix for that is to tighten up 4 bolts which is part of re-assembly. Sometimes the parts in there are worn and require touching up with a file, I bet usually they are just snugged down.

Re: New "Reproduction" tilt columns

Well, I gave up on finding the bearings. The only guy I could find that says he has them wants a small fortune for them ($180 for both) and by the time I buy the rest of the other parts it's not worth another $300, so per most people's suggestions I ordered an unpainted ididit column. Should be here next week or so.

Quoting myself here as I also just bought an Ididit column (instead of Flaming River) from board vendor MCB Matt for my 1972 GMC C15.

That's actually who I just bought one from. Great price and free shipping. The only thing that sucks is us 67/68 owners have to buy a $30 wheel adapter kit or grind the steering wheel hub down. I just paid $200 for a new steering wheel, so I bought the kit.

Like half that... PM sent.

Edit: The floor shift tilts are way cheaper, like $300 less, than the column shift ones... my bad...
