Another reason hes interested is because its the same body style of the '67 chevy longbed that he bought when he first started his business back in 1966... (Ill have to get pics of that for yall because he still owns it and restored it back in 1987-88 It looks awesome Black with a white top). Anyhoo its looking better for me being able to get this truck and make sure that somebody doesnt buy it and haul hunting dogs around in it... lol We are supposed to be getting some information about the truck as well as the info about the sealed bid auction thatll release it into the public... Anybody got any idea what we should offer for this thing? IM thinking around 1500-2000?!?!

on a side note.. i stopped by this past sat and checked out the burban on the side of I-95 south of peterburg... its got one of the extended roof deals like the red one earlier in this thread... its still complete but would need a DAYUM good cleaning... I may stop by and check on that one as well...

anyhoo enough rambling

So, what is happening with the ambulance? Have they put the tender out yet? Please keep us posted cause I'm curious and I'm sure others are as to what this ambulace will sell for.

If you have a garage maybe you should ask if can store it inside ( then you can really check it over) so it won't deteriorate sitting outside..

Re: GMC ambulance

This truck will always be on your mind. #1 You want this truck and more importantly #2 it help save your beloved granddad. To me this is priceless. I remember my granddad when he sold our 56 chevy short step. I will never forget seeing the truck drive away from the house. It will not depreciate. It is going to go up in value as said before. It may hurt a little now, but you will be glad you did later. BID TO WIN !!!

Re: GMC ambulance

Its too bad they are going the "Sealed Bid" auction route. If they are going to be selling the Ambulance that way its probably because they have had some inquiries on it and someone who has probably watched the "Barrett-Jackson" auction once or twice figures they are sitting on a gold mine with that old ambulance. Sealed bids are the worst thing for a buyer and the best thing for a seller. Now my friend is the moment of truth for you. You have to be honest with yourself and ask How bad do I want this ambulance. Its a one of one and you will probably never have an opportunity to own it again. As you stated it has sentimental value but on top of that it is a great long term investment for you.

I'm sitting up here in Canada looking at the pics of the Ambulance and if you weren't bidding on it I'd be willing to bid 3000. to 3500. and bring it back here which would probably cost me another 1500 or so, cause I'm sure I could get ( and it may take a little time, but it would still be worth it ) 7500.00 from a collector or ambulance company owner.

Like I said in my first post here make em pay cause if you lose it for a few hundred bucks you will kick your a** for the rest of your life. In my opinion I'd be bidding around the 4500. range ( but never an even number) and if someone outbids you then you know you gave it an honest shot.

Re: GMC ambulance

I stopped by and checked the ambulance out on friday and tried to find out what the reserve was on the auction but couldnt find anybody to talk to. I also found out some more info on the drivetrain... Its a 1969 GMC, 307 or 350 v8... I didnt think about checking the id tag in the glovebox to see what the displacement was... Also the odo is showing 05038.4 so I assume thats 105k, and its got a 3 on the tree, and supposedly the shifter linkage is messed up.... I also took a few more pics of it... which Ill post in a few minutes. Im kinda up in the air about this thing... I Really want it but I am nowhere near being able to spend big money on another project right now... I think Im gonna make a reasonable bid and hope for the best...

Re: GMC ambulance

Mileage is probably correct, but ambulances sometime spend a lot of time just sitting there running. Not as much as fire trucks, but still...

Don't buy an ambulance unless you don't mind spending a LOT of time talking to people. Maybe it's because mine is older, but I can't even get gas without having a 20 minute conversation with someone.

They are often sold with the lights and sirens (which that one has at least $500 worth on it), but usually they will have to remove or paint over any "official" ambulance markings. I don't think there is any problem adding them back yourself, just that there are usually rules that fire and police organizations can't sell marked vehicles.

For the record, I was chasing one of these down a year or so ago on ebay and I got outbid at $6500. It later changed hands again for over $7000. It depends on who in your area is interested in it. You're best off bidding what you can afford and letting things play out. It doesn't make sense to bid $4000 if the next highest bid is $1800.

Re: GMC ambulance

Here's some insperation...This ambulance rolled into the 2006 Chevy Nomad Convention in Sedona AZ last july. It was a pretty fresh resto too. It was for sale, but probably sold by now. Just a good solid example of the burb/ambulance.

You are correct in stating that its no point bidding 4000. if the next highest bid is 1800., but if the bids are sealed you dont what anyone else has bid and if you reallywant the item you you gotta go with a "pedal to the metal bid."

Right, but what I was getting at was that in a sealed bid auction they will sell it for the highest bid, regardless of what the SECOND highest bid is, so if you really want it you have to try and find a balance between what it is really worth (or how much you can afford to pay), and a bid that will win the auction hands down. Sure, you could bid $20,000 and be 100% confident you would be going home with it, but you would also be paying $16,000 too much, as no one else wold probably bid over $4000. Just saying be careful about bidding too much on it and getting stuck with it.

Another approach you could take is see if you can find out when the bids are being opened, and whether or not you can get the name of the high bidder after they have been read. If the high bid is lower than the amount you want to pay for it, offer the winner the money plus $500 or whatever right on the spot. Depends on whether the high bidder wants it as much as you, but they may be willing to take a little instant profit right on the spot, and you would get it for a price you're willing to pay without committing yourself to paying way too much for it unnecessarily.

Thumbs down Re: GMC ambulance

Theres a guy here in town that evidently has somebody on the squad in his pocket... so hes gonna end up with the sub regardless because he said he'd pay 500 more than the highest bid... I also found out that the reserve is set at 3500 for this jewel so Im out of the running... oh well maybe someday... the bad thing is that i have talked to a guy that works with his son in law and hes gonna cut this thing up and tub it...

Re: GMC ambulance

If they are having a true sealed bid auction then a bid that states "500.00" over the highest bid should be rejected. I guess you wont know that till the bidding is over. So to cover yourself in case they will accept a bid like that wait till 5 minutes before the bid closes and if you do not have to send any money with your bid, put in a bid of $7500.00 and see if that guy will pony up with the $8000. for the Burb. Remember I said in one of my other posts, "Make Em Pay".. If he takes it then you made him pay and althouigh you didnt get it you made the SOB pay, if he backs out, and you are the next highest bidder just tell them you cant do it either. Now the coup de grace is get someone you can trust, like your Grandpa or Mom or Dad, brother or sister and get one them to make a realistic bid thay you are willing to pay and do not worry about the reserve unless they stated on the bid form that the reserve is $3500. and then when the high bidder and you back out your other bidder make actually win the auction and you would just buy the Burb from them after the dust settles and its yours.. If noone bids up to the $3500. they would probably take the highest bid anyway or else what are they going to do with it. I love trying to beat a..holes at their own game. The key to this is keep your mouth shut and do not bid till the auction is just about over because if that guy has someone on the inside he may be peeking at the bids as well and you do not want anyone to know what you are bidding. I'd love to be involved in this !!!!
