Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Thanks for all the information fellas. I will be going on what you guys most all agree, this one is over priced for its condition. 72lb4x4, I am about 5 hours west of you in San Angelo (I am stationed at the Goodfellow air base). I have been over there to DFW though, to pick up my car I had shipped to Dallas. If you would not mind checking in on that truck I would greatly appreciate it. Like everyone has said, I have seen a lot of these trucks down here in Texas since I got here, this is actually the first one I have checked on. I was looking for an old car, but got burned out on finding tons of them that the owners would not sell. So, I decided to go to my favorite bodied truck ever and try my luck. Thanks for all the help though. Is there a general figure this truck is worth paying? I want to try and get some insight to how I can tell if a truck I find will be worth it or not. How much less are the longbeds costing also. Like I said, I don’t care if it is long or short bed, I love the bodies. I do not really like the stepsides though. If you can use this truck and its condition to tell me what a longbed would bring that would be great.

Gotta agree with Andy on this one. There's gotta be at least a half gallon of bondo on that body.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

When you life that carpet...there will be even more work you will see...I bet the floor is rusted out a bit...that rust along the weather stripping...also goes inward at lears the same amount...and maybe even more.

Lots of work...abut I would snatch it for no more than 1500 cause it is a SWB.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

I wouldn't pay more than $1200 for it. That one looks like it's hiding alot. Patience is the key with these. I paid $900 for my '71 swb with 87k original miles. Granted, it was a low option model but had far less rust than what that one has.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Thanks for the info so far. By the sound of it I will keep looking around for a better one at a better price. I really don’t think the guy will part with it for less then $2800 or even more maybe. He was pretty set on the $3500 price and was really reluctant to want to sell it then. I do not mind working with a rusty project since that is what I usually get (originally from PA where most everything is rotted up). But if I can get a good start this time for a good price I will defiantly wait it out. Since I am now in the land of Texas where 40 year old frames look better then PA 10 year old ones I will wait. Thanks again fellas.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Up here in the northeast that truck would sell to someone but I think were your at from what I've seen you probably should pass. In the end you are going to be the one that needs to be satisfied. Also you have to take into account what you want in the end. Meaning, No Rust Replaced Panels and Parts or Repaired Rust that Inevitably Always Seems to Come Back. For Example: The truck I bought has ten times the rust (I could stick my head through the bedside) only paid $610.00 off of ebay but It had a good frame and driveline and my plan from day one was to replace everything GOOD LUCK No matter what your decision.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Prices vary considerably with locality because it costs a bit to transport these things. Some areas have a climate that preserves vehicles for centuries. Where I like, a plastic milk jug will rust in a month outside!

Around here you could get about $3000 for that truck but I think you can do a lot better for $3500 in Texas.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

To be perfectly honest I wouldn't give more than $500.00 for a truck like that. It has pending transmission issues, rocker panels that look like a piece of swiss cheeze, and a sh!tty coat of paint hiding all the cancer, no chrome, no trim, and the interior is trashed. Keep lookin'. It looks like a typical Northern truck thats been playing hard in a salt road environment. I have a SWB (in my Avitar) and the old girl is for the most part rock solid and in work. I looked for 5 years, and found this one loaded. Patients......... I may sell, but you won't come close on 3500.00

Now it's a 69 LWB

Well guys, Got a 69 LWB question for you all now. How much is this one worth? He wants $2000 or reasonable offer, but If I have learned anything so far (I am trying to) this one should be around the same as the first truck I was looking at? I say the $1200-$1500 range? The tires in the pictures have been changed out for brand new ones also.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

See the rust rot on that right kick panel? Take a closer look. Overall, this one appears to be in much better shape than the SWB. Maybe not a bad candidate but you need to look closely at the door bottoms, rockers, bed floor etc. Automatic trans (+), also air conditioning (+). Take a close look at that upper drip rail for rust. Looks like a low milage engine (+). Has deluxe dash, no tach (+) Black interior panels and seat, dash pad look like they are in a repairable state (+) No more than 1200.00

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Thanks again. I am happy for all the replies and fast also. With all of the help I soon should be able to look for the specific areas everyone tells me for rust. I actually looked at that picture and didn’t notice the rust until you said about it. I guess experience with these trucks is what I am lacking. Thanks again for the help.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

I just did a little searching on the "Trucks For Sale " section on this board and at the bottom of page 3 on the 67-72 Trucks For Sale pageboard member CST 69 has a black 69 pretty decent looking 4x2 Shortbox and he is asking 3971. and says he is firm , but maybe he'll take 3500. and you would be lot better off with his truck than the one you were initially looking at for 3500.. The only glitch is he is in North Carlolina , so you'd have to it shipped ( which is probably too expensive ) or fly to N.C and drive her home and you'd be enjoying your truck right off the getgo!!!

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

Sorry to bust any bubbles ou there, but I paid $1100 for my '69. It only has surface rust on the rocker panels. Period. It is in great shape otherwise. I bought it from the original about 3 yrs. ago. But then some say I got a deal of a lifetime! Who knows!

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

I cant stop myself from wanting one of these babies. I found a 71 LWB automatic, not the manual SWB I want, but this one looks better then the other two and I can always make it a short bed. What are the opinons on this one. He is asking $2800. There is damage on the driver side front fender and on the grill and bumper

Nacho.Just as a suggestion you may want to read some of the FAQ's.There are a lot of posts there on fixing different things that are pretty common. That will help you develop a better understanding of where to look for rust and other problems. When you go to look at a truck try taking a magnet(one of the ones like a bussiness card),it will help you determine if there is rust hiding under the paint.

I still see rust on the bottom of the kick panel on this one too. Be sure and go under it and check the cab supports and bed cross sills.

Re: New and need advice on a 71 SWB

This is great info, you guys really have an eye for the problem spots on these trucks. The guy said this truck is almost 100% rust free, he must have over looked that area. I need to get with the program and learn all the tricks you fellas know.

Texas is full of trucks! I guess I should hook on the trailer and start driving south.

Take a look...

Good advice. Way too much wrong with that truck for the money asked.
