Re: Exhaust Poll

Maybe... I just like to hear my tunes without having to rock-the-block

I want to be able to take this thing on road trips too, and that resonance gets old after a couple hundred miles. But I still want it to sound tough and let you know what it's packin at WOT.

Sorry for the semi-hijack... Though it is relevant to the subject at hand

Sorry, no sound clip.

Re: Exhaust Poll

Everyones got flows, the sound gets old after awhile when you hear it ALL THE TIME. 350 SBC with headers, 2 inch pipes and 18" glasspacks, exiting before the rear wheels with 3 1/2" chrome tips gives a nice old-school sound. Though I guess its kinda rank according to the parents. I like the sound though. I'll probably end up getting some turbo muffs for it, cause the 'packs won't get any quieter.

Thumbs up Re: Exhaust Poll

I'm running a set of Sanderson 3/4 length headers, 2.5' pipes right out to the back with 4' s/s tips. Oh yea just about for got running Flows.

I ran until a few days ago Headman full length headers and that resonence at 50 mph was clearly notciable. With the 3/4 length Sandersons the exhaust sounds richer, a lot fuller not so much of a low drone.

esll.

Re: Exhaust Poll

I mounted a pair of Walker Dynomax Super Turbos this morning. Sounds really nice. Currently I just have 2 1/2" straight pipe to just under the back of the cab, then the mufflers. The bed is off the truck, so I really dont know what it will sound like once the bed is on or once I put turndowns on the pipes.

I have yet to decide if I am going to exit out the side ahead of the rear wheels or out the back. I am leaning toward out the back, but right now it sounds great. I will make a video this afternoon.

FYI: The mufflers were $44.00 each.

Re: Exhaust Poll

I`d have to consider you`re stroker motor, cam, and stall speed when looking at mufflers. They make different sound at different rpms.I think Flowmasters make a nice clean sound loping along with a lumpy cam and a good bit of compression. Then, roar when you hit it.
Magnaflows have more of a smooth low tone which also sounds good at a lope. Then, crack when you hit it.
You definately have a motor where you don`t need all muffler to sound good.In the end it`s the motor work you want to show off,not a pair of mufflers.

Re: Exhaust Poll

I have run tons of different mufflers on my various trucks 3 chamber flow masters, Dynomax, Proflow mufflers the biggest thing I will add is make sure you have an h pipe installed. I have a buddy with a big block and he had a complete stainless system installed and it sounded like crap till I got him to go back and have an H pipe added! He was ready to trash a 5 or 6 hundred dollar exhaust system till he added the H pipe!

Re: Exhaust Poll

MAGNAFLOW!!!! Its basically the same thing as a straight pipe. A nice rumble at idle, loud enough to know its there when cruisin, and at WOT they sound freakin amazing!!!! If you want a deep, throaty exhaust note and performance go with magnaflow.

Re: Exhaust Poll

It depends a lot on how the engine is built too.....

I have a 79' Malibu my friend a 70 Nova. We're both running Small Blocks, both true 2.5'inch dual exhaust with no H or X pipe. He has the loud "American Thunder" Flowmasters, while I have the "quieter" super 40-series. My car is louder at idle, but at a cruise his car is louder and has a bit more resonance inside, but step on the gas and let my engine rev and with my "quieter" flowmaster are a lot louder then his.

He has a mild plain-jane Small block, while I'm running a much bigger cam and have more performance-oriented parts. Mine is only a 305 too, his is a 350. My car is LOUD though, and sounds a lot different from his and pretty much most other "stock" vehicles with a flowmaster (or two) muffler(s) underneath.

Personally, I really like the Bullet "race-only" glass packs. I have one on my Jeep (258-6) and it sounds perfect, isn't loud, but you can hear it. For a V8 with dual exhaust though...... be careful.

I prefer a single 3 inch system... a 3 inch flows the same as 2 - 2.5s (hydraulics is strange that way)

I've heard they do flow the same, but I've been told that you lose torque with the 3"

Re: Exhaust Poll

You lose torque with a 3" dual system, but you actually gain it with a 3" single system. There's a reason car manafacturers run a single 2.5-3" single system other than emissions standards. The single system helps scavenging, which is basically like vacuum pulling exhaust out of the head ports to improve flow. An h or x-pipe does a similar job, but not really as effective. In general, a single system may not sound as mean as a dual system. That doesn't mean it isn't though.
