Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

I would honestly like tosee what the fear is of VIN ID thieft.
I *think* it just stems from perople being hyper sensitive about information.
Maybe I'm wrong.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

I was putting the pics on photobucket and linking them because thats what my wife said would be best to do. Also the IT guy at my wifes office said that the pics needed to be sized down before I could post. As you can see the last set of pics that I posted I didnt re size and they seem to work alright (a little large though). I have most of my pics saved on a CD. So can I just copy and paste them from my CD to the forum? I was under the impression that I couldnt. Thanks for any suggestions, I am not very computer savy.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

You baught my Sub's cousin.

the gas tank on mine is similar enough to be the same one. I have seperate paper work that came with it. .. It just calls it a SUBUBAN TRAVEL TANK. tm.
simple paper work schematic, kind of a glorified jc, whitney imo. dealer installed option is my guess also... I am happy with it so far though, and gas gage is actually accurate when it gets down to a quarter tank.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Jtrux, I agree but he thinks it would take too much work. He wants aftermarket A/C any ways so I dont know why he wants to go thru the hassle.

Prairewolf, Alright now we are gettin somewhere on the mystery of the gas tanks origins thanks to you and CG. My gas tank looks as though it was bolted thru the plywood flooring on the back of the truck (I didnt see any straps like factory blazer style tanks, and there were small bolt holes thru the rear floor). Could you tell me how your tank is fastened in. Thanks in advance. Also, you have a sweet looking suburban. I am starting to think that this dark green was very popular for these trucks.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Heres some extra pictures of gas tank. 4 long bolts, actually well done for after market, but a lot of things were well done back in the day, .. as for the dark green, the PO said his Uncle did not like the factory Medium Olive, so he did what looked like a makko quality repaint to darker green.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Is that the one from near San Antonio (craigslist??)?? If so I wanted it pretty bad, I just couldn't get anywhere near there!! Super sweet and you stole it from what he emailed me for a price, it was worth every bit of the asking price and will be worth at least double that once you get her running!

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Prarie wolf, I think you have solved my mystery. My gas tank has that exact set up with the bolts thru the bottom of the gas tank and up thru the rear floor of the burb. Unfortunately the sender unit looks smaller than the blazer type, so that might be difficult to get replaced if needed. If my tank cleans up well I will use it instead of my blazer tank. I like the idea of filling up once during a long trip instead of every 200 miles or so, like I would if I used the smaller blazer tank.

70rs/ss, Yes sir this is the very one of which you speak. I went to this guys place expecting alot, and was still floored by its condition when I got there. Not only was it in good shape but it had alot of options which was a must for me. The only options that it didnt have that I would have liked was tilt steering and tach dash. It also had all three original rows of seats which impressed me. It was definately an Austin truck its whole life because it had some sort of park sticker for the Austin area from 1982-1983. It also had an old cb radio license sticker with a guys Austin adress from 1980. There was also an Austin country music station sticker on the rear bumber.

The funny part is I waited two and a half weeks before contacting the guy. I figured it was already sold but I should at least try to inquire about it. How shocked was I when he called me back 3 hours later. Needless to say I drove to Austin the next day and bought it. He said alot of people wanted it but no one had the cash. Most wanted trades or payment plans. As I was chaining the burb down on my trailer a guy drove by really slowly looking at me. The PO who was standing next to me saw him and started laughing. He said I bet he wishes he had just gotten it now. Apparrently the guy wanted the PO to come down like 50 or 100 bucks and the PO wouldnt. So the guy figured he would let time go by and let the PO figure he better take the dudes offer. Then I come in and screw that plan up. Oh well I guarantee I will be a better owner than someone that has to let the deal get cancelled over 50 bucks.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Alright so far I have put a battery in and everything seems to work electrically; except for the heater and A/C blower motors. Further inspection showed that the fuse for these was taken out. So I will put one in on my day off and see if it was just a fuse or more. The motor turns over but I have not tried to start it. I am off work tues.-thurs. during this time I will try to start it and possibly drive it. I will post a progress report and more pics during this time (including spid pics of both burbs).

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

I'd have bought it ten times over, just TX is a bit of a jount for me and I had back surgery over the summer. If it had run at all I would have flown in and drove it home. In the shape it's in, I'd have had to drive over and tow back, so it would have been twice the fuel etc. Score for sure! If by some odd chance you decide you want to sell it and maybe deliver it to AZ, LMK !!

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

My blazer has a similar tank thats just plain huge. I can't stand it and I hate to admit it but they did an excellent job putting it in, so much in fact that I figure out how to get it out!!

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Thanks for all the input on the gas tank. 70RS/SS if I ever decide to sell I will let you know.

Sorry no new pics. Didnt have time to load them to computer.

Well on Wednesday I had the day off and tried to get her running. The PO fibbed a little when he said it would run. It turned over but there was no fire to the plugs. We traced that back to the points bieng bad. Replaced the points for a whopping 6 bucks but it still wouldnt run. Then we found out that the PO had a bunch of the plug wires going to the wrong plugs. Still would not run. We then adjusted the timing and bingo!!

She runs really smooth and wasnt cold natured at all but does have a little smoke coming out of the exhaust (my dad thinks it could just be due to her sitting for a few years). Put a little transmission fluid in her and she drove around the yard. The brakes are very weak but the emergency brake is good so I used that to stop her. So besides tune up stuff I will now work on the brakes to get her completely driveable. I am also going to get new weather stripping to keep wind noise out of the cab and then she should be ready to get registered and back on the road.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

I'd love to have it, I would have considered flying in and driving it home, but he was pretty clear that he didn't think it would run, so I was discouraged by that. A motor that has been sitting for a long time should be primed with oil, and some shot down into each cylinder to prevent a dry start, but I am sure you guys did that. It was a steal of a deal, and I am completely green with envy! Please, please, please keep me in mind, if I get lucky and sell my Blazers (X's 2) I would have the heard thinned a bit and a bit more $$$ in my pocket to make buying it a reality. LMK!!

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

70RS/SS, I will definately keep you at the front of the list if it ever goes. Normally I would say I will never get rid of it but I am fed up with my job, and want to work for myself doing something in the classic car industry. Of course the only way I can do that is to get rid of all my debt; and the fastest way to do that is to sell all my stuff. Its a shame I am trying to liquidate, because I was trying to sell my 72 blazer so I could eventually get a better 72 blazer project; now I want to get rid of my blazer to pay off debt.

Right now I am just focusing on getting her mechanically sound. I am also going to replace alot of the original weatherstripping since alot of it is dried out. Unfortunately I did not put oil down each cylinder like I should of. I did however crank it alot before trying to start it to pump oil into the top end.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

Hey, I've done the same "tool around the block using the e-brake to slow down" thing in one of my old cars before I got around to bleeding the system properly.

I had that exact same 40 gallon tank in my 1970 Suburban. One of the other two 67-72 subs in town has that tank as well.

I agree with the hanging too low thing. I drug mine on a rock or two back in the day. I've since replaced it with a later model tank as I'm now fuel injected.

Call me crazy but that Suburban roof rack looks very much like the factory roof rack on my 72 Chevelle wagon. Has anybody ever compared them to see if they interchange?

Good possibility, since they were a dealer add on.

Re: Finally got a 72 suburban

I have an extra rear tank on my burb made by a AZ fab co (not like yours) but I replaced my sending unit with one I found in at a marine store, for a boat onboard tank. If yours fails in the future this info may shorten your search?? Something like this http://www.iboats.com/UNIVERSAL_ELEC...view_id.392304

Just make sure the to get one with 0-90 ohms so your gauge will work with it.
