Re: tilt column rebuild

I keep coming across this thread when I search for tilt column rebuild so I wanted to add my 2 cents.

I took apart 90% of my van tilt column last night (the only think left is the bowl on the shift tube). I plan on making a "how to" thread so search for that for detailed pictures and how to make a pivit pin removal tool that doesnt require a slide hammer.

When i did mine, i just threaded a bolt into the pivot pin. Then, with a nut, washer, on a small socket(bigger then the pivot pin) i tightened the nut and it pulled the pin out without damage to any other part

Its around page 70 on my build

Re: tilt column rebuild

I have the actual tool (somewhere). I could not find it so I did the exact same thing as you. Plus it helped having the tool to know for sure what I was going after. I took some good photos and will post them real soon to help out others. So I got that apart just fine. The last thing I have to seperate is the shift bowl from the tube that goes down inside the column.

Re: tilt column rebuild

Im lazy and have not worked on my how to thread as promised above. But I did take some pictures that helped out here.

I also scored the shift bowl removal and installation tool on eBay for about $15 each. I am still wanting the socket that fits the large nut near the upper tilt bearing.

Re: tilt column rebuild

I ended up getting the "special socket" Kent Moore J-22599 from this website. I paid way more than I wanted to but I had been searching the web and eBay for the last month and this was the only one that I have found.

I picked up a blast cabinet from Harbor Freight (HF) so I'm planning on cleaning everything up and then looking into getting the HF powder coating tool, but might end up taking the parts to a professional powdercoater in town (I have some big suspension parts to do also).
