Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

talked to a buddy at work (owns a mechanic shop) and he's bringing his digital timing light and vacuum gauge tomorrow...

I would like to find a used HEI setup so I can keep my Mallorey unit. I sold the MSD parts off the truck..

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

I've flipped a few vehicles, one a 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup. I wasn't intending on selling it, but ended up getting an '05 crew cab pickup, so I didn't need the comanche....made a few hundred on that one. It's kinda fun making things a little better and making some coin off of it. Good luck!

I don't know how I missed "The Turd". That's a decent looking truck. Good luck with the sale Mike.

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

Set the timing to 12 today with my buddies timing light... runs better but still backfires under hard acceleration when cold.. Guessing it's the timing chain... Gonna get the trim on tomorrow that a board member sent to me.

Drove the turd up to Blockbuster tonight, wanted to die when warm while sitting at the light... any thoughts? I think I need to let it get warmer before I tune it again tomorrow... idles great when cold.

thanks for the quick shipment, it all worked great. Used a few zip screws here and there but it was perfect...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

You may need to replace the fuel filter to solve the back fire. Hets clogged and starves for fuel, but the timing is still advanced based on rpm, etc. Check it out.

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

backfire is pretty much gone with 12 degrees of timing... I think it has an exhaust leak on the driver manifold... and the oil leak is starting to kill my grass... another week and i'm changing it out myself...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

pulled the 1405 off tonight and replaced it with my Holley electric choke... much better running, but still backfires under hard acceleration... Looks like timing chain, cover and pan gasket are getting switched this weekend.. I'm sick of oil on my driveway and grass!

Is the edelbrock electric choke or Holley better? I am planning on keeping the nearly new Edelbrock 1406 for my 327...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

So I got sick and tired of watching oil POUR out of the timing cover of this truck. Today I changed the timing chain (backfired through carb), cover, oil pan gasket and rear main gasket. I also had to fix the inspection cover since it "tink, tink, tinked" against the flywheel/clutch and made it sound like a bad lifter. What a dirty job!!!

wonder why the oil leaked?

wonder why the timing was off? Broken tooth on the crank sprocket and the crank moved 2 degrees due to slack in the chain... This was a piece of crap "bicycle chain" double roller...

$20 got me a new standard chain and sprocket set with 0 slack...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

final pics tomorrow morning, I need to check on a new dampner too.. Are they suppose to have a groove where the front seal is?

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

not supposed to be grooved but you don't need a new one, go to your local napa and ask for a "seal n' sleeve" for the damper. its a thin metal sleeve that you tap onto the balancer to eliminate the groove.

thankfully the autozone guy knew about those too.. They didn't have the $50 balancer but did have the $6 sleeve. I'll post some pics tomorrow night, thanks for the tip though, I didn't know about that part until this morning...

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

I hope its just a timing chain issue, before my engine swap my 350 had a flat cam lobe that was causing the backfire through the carb under hard accel.

Good luck!!

Re: Project "flip that truck or else!"

well, it still backfires a little under hard accel but it's fine if driven normally...

truck sold tonight, new buyer wants myself and sourkrout (John) to replace the roof...

$2,000 plus $500 for the roof, still not a bad truck for $2500... even if it needs an engine rebuild in it's future...
