Re: Heap Re-do, Pics

Thanks to all for the compliments, it is very much appreciated.

I’ll try and answer some of your questions……..

The grill, I really do love the 73-74 grill style but mine was just barely a driver quality piece. I had always wanted a Stull tube grill back when I bought my first square body (1976) but I couldn’t afford one. Now I can. LOL.

The motor is a 1980 integrated head 250-6 with a 3-speed. I cut up another valve cover to replace the butt ugly stock one. The stock air cleaner base was cutout and welded to a piece of 1/8” steel. Doing so allowed me to use a better looking air cleaner on the stock square top carburetor.

Other than painting the fender jams, underside of the hood, and inner fenders I didn’t spend too much time under the hood. The firewall and frame will get a little more attention during the upcoming motor swap. The new 350 will get an all over paint job, same orange as the wheels, and just a small dab of shiny parts.

Again, thanks for the compliments!

SICK!!! I liked your truck before..it's always been one of my favorites, but now it's even better! Awesome work...the flat black looks perfect...I dig the orange rallies, the stance, the tire size. She's a 10!

Re: Heap Re-do, Pics

I've got to admit, I really like your truck and ordinarily I am not a fan of the Iron Cross, retro type stuff. EXCELLENT job.

Just since you're asking for input, I'd leave the straight six and just do a makeover on its look. I found a picture somewhere on the web (maybe it was here, not sure) that had a 235 that was pulled from the truck, the intake ground smooth and the whole thing painted red. Then it has the Offenhauser finned valve cover & side covers, beehive finned oil filter housing. Something like that would look SO cool in your truck. Plus, I agree, the sound of a mild cam, and a split manifold would match your truck perfectly.

Either way, I truly like what you've done. Incidentally, is spraying that satin black really that tough? Is it DIY stuff or leave-it-to-a-pro stuff?

P.S. Are the rims Chevy Hugger Orange? Rattle can, automotive spray gun painted or powder coated. If rattle can, just a Duplicolor type, or what?

SPI Orange ( http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/homepage.htm ) single stage sprayed with a Harbor Freight 7.00 mini gun. Sadly, Southern Polyurethanes no longer offers "colors". They're selling their epoxys, primers, and awesome clears. You might find a dealer that has a quart or two left.

When i first saw the SPI orange I decided right then and there that my next project would some how some way use it. Pictures can't come close to giving you the "look"of that color.

Motor..... With it being an integrated head 250 there really isn't anything you can do with it. None of the aftermarket valve covers will fit and the butt ugly square carb is your only choice. I do have a old style 250 head in the garage but I'm going forward with a V8, soon.

Paint......It's not that it's hard to spray, you just have to change the way you spray. You have to lay down 1 nice wet coat then walk away. Wait 15 minutes and do it again. No going back and touching up here and there. Not following the tech sheet as written will alter the expected finish. Don't get me wrong, it looks really good, I'm just anal when it comes to paint finish.

ok thats it . Icome thru Newport News all the time on business . Wangt to get together with you ( if thats ok ) & see your great looking stable . Maybe we should start a mid Atlantic truck club & do a rally or meet or something . We can talk about it . Think we need to let Atlantic Ave in Va. Beach know
what being Square is all about.

That is one awesome inline! I have always had a fondness for them since my brothers first truck. I think between the three of them, they probably had 4-5 of them. That was the first thing I ever worked on. As for the "heap". That thing is friggen awesome. I'm a 4x4 guy, but do love slammed square bodies and this one is a sweet truck. Great work!

hey thats an awsome ride!

one i think i will say though is that if you were to rip it around here your tailpipes would be crushed flat in all of about an hour. (its really hilly in these parts)

The pipes have been changed since that picture was taken. After the V-8 swap I went with new 2.50" exhaust with "Meg" tips. And, yet another upgrade, the "Megs" are now bright shiny chrome.
