It is wide. We put the front sheet metal on it to see what it looks like and with the wheels that are on it now the ouside of the tire is even with the outside of the fender opening. It would rub now but a 1/2 or 3/4 inch more backspacing and it's there
I think alot of people want to use wheels they have "laying around" and so they complain about it being too wide. I figure that I have to get new wheels anyway so I can order some with the correct back spacing and it will look right, noone will know the difference, beside the money I save on not going the (everyone's doing it) mustang II IFS is money for wheels. This conversion can be done pretty cheap and it's truck parts not small car parts.

im so glad to see you doing this build instead of going mustang II or s10 swap i was thinking of using a 69 c10 from suspension and the rear trailing arms so its nice to see what i might have to do as well. good work keep it up cant wait to see what else you do

I was talking to Derric the other day about rear suspension and we decided that we are going to take the body off of the frame. With some of the stuff we have planed we decided it would be easier to work on the frame with the body out of the way. I have a picture of the type of suspension we're going to put under this on my computer at home. I'll get it posted in the next couple of days.
Hopefully this weekend we'll get the body off so I will take more pictures.

The wheels would definitly rub especially while turning.

We were going to take the body off of the frame but we decided to use my extra frame. I've had a frame kicking around here for a few years from a 52 Suburban. It has all the panel/Sub only brackets and it has the higher kickup over the rear axle. The kickup might be high enough that we won't have to notch the rear frame, we'll see when we get there.

Just found this thread; that where I would have sent you for turbo Buick info. FWIW, I think you're making the right choice in going to the Vortec. The later motors aren't much fun to keep tuned; I'd hate to fight the carb'd version.

I went with a 1980 1/2 ton IFS on my 1951 3100. Not entirely happy with the results but it cost me a grand total of 100 bucks so I'm not hurt to bad. I'm considering an S10 swap now and selling the other frame. Not totally decided yet. I narrowed my IFS 1 1/2 inches and welded it back together. Wasn't that hard but now of course it will need big backspacing on the wheels, probably drop spindles and maybe 1 1/2 half coils cut off the springs to make it sit a little lower than stock. I knew of all these issues when I started it and was ragged by a few people for going that route. I am building a daily driver so I was willing to handle these issues but I'm leaning more toward the S10 swap now.

What's the finished product look like? I've been seeing a lot of discussion on the narrowed C/K clip but don't know much about it. I've got a '49 1 ton panel that has the uncut clip welded in place on the frame. Looks to be about 1/2" too wide on each side, looking for El Dorado wheels now!

I have a couple pics with all the front sheet metal just sitting in place, I'll try to locate them and get them on here. Keep in mind that I had not lowered it any. Check out a guy named Mobilortho on here by searching the members list. I followed what he did and his is looking good. He has a build thread on here describing the process and an extensive collection of pics on webshots or photobucket.

Over these past few weeks I have been able to get some more work done on my frame. I took off the trans crossmember, and the crossmember that bolts on underneith where the trans and torquetude come together and all the front spring brackets. No turning back now. I've tried to keep Them in good shape so mabe I can sell them to help supliment the build, so if anyone knows anyone looking for these items point them this way. I will post some pics in a few days.

I realized it's been awhile since I posted. We put a notch in the front of the frame where the crossmember will go so that it will sit lower. With out it it sits too high. I'll have to post some pics later on. Overall the burban has been on hold waiting for more time and money. Everyone know how that is, right?

Well it's been forever since I posted last. Now that the carshows and cruising is coming to a close I figured I let everyone know what's up. While I've had no time to work on the Burban it has given me sometime to think about what I want out of it. I decided that the C-10 front sits alot higher the I want it to so I'm going to put it under my Father-in-law's 51 GMC. I kinda wanted a suspension that looked like it came from the factory. MII and Dakota frontends look the part but MII is a car and Dakota is too expensive. Nova/Camaro subframes look butchered to me and doesn't look very clean. I've been doing a lot of research on S-10 swaps and I've decided that is the way I'm going to go. Some people don't think that S-10s are "Real Trucks", my Suburban won't be treated like a truck away, that is what my 71 is for.
I couldn't find any after market companies that are making kits for Suburbans anymore so I decided that if I had to build a kit anyway I wanted an all wheel drive Burban. I found a 4x4 89 S10 on Craigslist for $100 or I should say what's left of an S-10. It has the cab with everything in it, and a rolling chassis with a toasted 4.3, Gas tank is there too.

From what I understand you take these front bed mounts and turn them around swap them side to side and they are used to mount the front of pickups to them I would think suburbans and panels would be the same. There is not very much info about S-10 swaps on Suburbans.

These mid bed mounts I think I can use to mount the body of the Sub to, either the mid or the back mounts on the sub and then make the other two mounts I will need.

Nice score on the S-10! I got mine for $100 also, but it was too long so I had to cut it down. You probably did the smartest thing looking around and doing research before your build. I don't know how much stuff I tossed that I should have kept. Oh well, live and learn right. Keep us posted on your progress. I've yet to see an S-10 burb build; or at least one that I recall.

That's the way it is for me. I found some saying such and such did an S-10 burb swap but I couldn't find any first hand info, so it's like I'm doing it from scratch but, I plan on documenting it.

I used a 1981 malibu wagon frame for my panel. It was just the right width and it didn't need any wheel spacers. I cut it in half to make it the right wheel base and cut the frame off behind the coil mounts and used 2 x 4 box to replace it. It worked great and it was only $100 for the whole car.

Sweet70beast, No really wasn't a big deal. I did about 10 years ago. I remember the rockers are very close to the frame and you can't have a flat floor because the rear susp. is kinda high. I have 3 kids and I put a back seat in for them. Yes I am planning on a build thread when I start working on it again. I'm building a 1954 Chevy truck, 1948 F*** panel and 1948 F*** COE for other people and haven't had time to work on it. Hopeing to get at least on the road for this summer. I have most parts to get on the road just lack of time. I'll try to get some pictures soon. I hardly have any pictures while I was building it, I work on it and just keep rolling and forget to take pictures.

I had a very good weekend. A friend of mine has a lift in his garage and he let me use it. Long story short I was able to put the body on the new chassis in 2 days. I was suprisingly easier than I thot it would be.
