Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

Alright alright.... here we are ladies and gents. Plated outside inside and boxed. Overkill?? lol i read into SCOTI Recycle project and looked like a good idea to do all the reinforcement. I just wanted to make sure its nice and solid being as i will be taking the kiddos on trips and hauling trailers and such. After everything was welded up i hit it with my wire wheel and shot some rustoleum black on it to help clean it up a bit. Next step is pulling the front clip and motor to dig into the motor mounting situation.

Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

Work on the truck has been slow, The engine and trans are all in the truck. I have just been getting everything lined up and bolted in. Then its finishing up the fuel system and firing it up. About ready to get a rear drive shaft made, anyone have a measurement on that with a short crew? Or how to measure for it? And I'll get some pics up of it sitting in the for the pic police!

Thanks for the bump Cheyenne!

Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

do you have the stock 2 piece long bed drive shaft?
If so you should just be able to have 14" taken out of the rear piece.

No it didn't come with the truck. I might have to watch for one at a pick and pull so i can just have it cut down instead of having a whole new one made.

Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

Update. I have the engine and trans in and bolted up. I did have to go with TBSS manifolds to get it to fit in there, so I have an extra set laying around if anyone needs some. Still searching for a CC drive-shaft to cut down. I worked on pulling the front clip tonight for ease of wiring the engine in. I think i will also spray some new paint while its off. I have a parts pile waiting on me, Skyjacker SS brake lines, SJ shocks, new gas tanks and plumbing, all new brake componants. I'm on the fence about wheels either stock steel wheels and caps or procomps black rock crawler wheels. I will be getting some 36" goodyears from a local gov surplus dealer.

Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

looks great, how is all the wiring on the 6.0? what about bolting it up to a th400 or a manual trans? I have dreams of a SWB square body with a 5.3/6.0 and a 5 speed stick.

I don't know if it's worth the trip or not, but Becker Tire in Great Bend used to sell the retreads for $75 each. The pre retreads were a mixed bag, it seems like all of them I bought were different heights. They fit perfectly on a 16.5 x 9.75 rim.

Actually the wiring is easy. I sent it to wait4me and it came back great. I had mixed feelings about sending it to them but i was suprised. It was all labeled and re-wraped to factory look. I had them take all the trans wires out so its a stand alone engine harness. The computer was flashed to a Silverado HD tune.

oh that sounds fairly simple. how about using an older tranny behind an ls series motor? I would like to run a manual trans.

All i had to do was get a flexplate bushing to take up the space between the torque converter and flexplate. I'm not sure on a manual though. I know that trucks come out with five speeds so Im sure you could aquire the parts to do it.

Thanks for the info Jonboy. I wasn't sure yet on what size of rim i would need.
There is a supplier in Halstead Ks which is a little closer for me im going to pick up some tires from.

Re: 86 Crew cab 4x4 6.0 build

Those have a completely different tread pattern than I remembered. Looks like a great deal for the price. A set of the Hummer wheels would be sweet, too.
