Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

Finally decided to just sync up my phone and get some pictures up. Ive got a little sanding done on my bed. filling in the stake holes. Ive also taken the carb off and going through it. The water pump has been in need of replacement so I have it taken off and waiting for the new one. Also, torn the entire dash apart getting it ready to sand out and get cleaned up, primered and prepared for a vintage air system...

So the list I have to get done so far is:

~Finish cleaning up bed and get back together
~fab up a gas tank filler door on the inside of bed
~install new valve covers
~install rebuilt carb
~install new water pump
~weld in patch panels where old A/C unit was
~strip sand and paint entire inside of cab
~dynomat inside of cab and lay new carpet
~rewire tail lights and brake lights
~fab battery tray (possibly fab box for under seat)
~Install New headers and have exhaust reran (Had to tear down old pipes when installing rear mount gas tank)

Oh, BTW.

Thinking that I may Fabricate my own replacement brackets for the alt and power steering pump. Need to be rid of the separate setup I have.

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

I went with the block bracketes off a 91 suburban. Two large aluminum blocks on either side of the water pump on my 350 that hold my power steering/alt/ac compressor and extra accessory also runs a serpentine belt love the setup and was cheap if you can nab one at a boneyard they should fit most small blocks.

Do you have a picture of that set up? That may be easier for me.

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

They should look something similar to this I had mine powder coated black and everything is tucked in so its hard to get a picture of my exact setup. Also if you do go this rout be sure to grab the exact years truck model, with or without a/c,2wd/4wd, lower rad hose, upper rad hose, and waterneck as you'll need these to make sure everything clears when you do your setup

Should end up something like this

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

Wait, Dylan... I just realized you said small block. I have a big block.

With the newer setups work with my 71 402?
I know the block were the same for a few years but will a suburban 7.4 work with my 6.6?

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

Well, good news and bad news....

Bad news is I got the motor running and sounding good. Good news is ive decided to pull it back out, and take the truck down to frame and do it up completely new.

Im going to take her completely down to frame and have it powder coated. All new lines everywhere. Take the motor apart and have her cleaned up and add a little more power. I have a lot of work to do under the cab on rust repair and a few other places, so this is really something that needs to be done.

I was going to just get her running and drive her for a year or so but since shes already this far torn down it would be a shame to do it again in another year.

So....

Today starts my frame off build, wish me luck.

Thank you! Me too. I have a feeling its going to take me a little bit to complete though. But would rather make sure everything is done right and now have to worry about it.

So tonight I clean my garage up. I started taking all the small things off like hood hinges, visors, seat belts etc. I will keep doing the small things until I have a full day to put into larger things.

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

So got the front end off. Everything is running great! Found a little rust where the bottom of the passenger side fender mounts but thats not a big deal. I little welding and fab work and it will be back to new. Tore off both fenders and core support. finished taking out the small stuff from the inside of the cab. feels like the tear down is always faster than putting it back together

was getting things ready to take the glass out (windshield and glass in the back) but Ive never taken glass out. Any recommendations? Hints? amything I should watch out for when Im doing it?

I have had two experiences taking glass out; the easy one and the hard one. On my original cab, the rubber was petrified and rock hard. I tried heating it up, but used too much heat and cracked the glass. So be careful.

If your rubber is soft enough and you don't care about saving it, you can cut into the rubber on the edge of the glass and just take it out. If you are trying to save the rubber, you would need to carefully pry out the rubber at and the whole windshield will come out still in the rubber.

If the rubber is hard, I would say just be careful and slice it up as much as you can.

I am probably not giving the best explanation, but it's not a difficult job as long as you are patient and careful, which I was not the first time. The second time I did it, I took it out of a truck this guy had and i bought the windshield from it. It came out super easy because the rubber was soft. I just cut around the glass with a razor.

Hope this helps!

It's looking good. Your cab seems to be in pretty nice shape. Wish mine was like that when I got it!

Absolutely helps! I'm not saving the rubber or glass!!! The windshield is cracked. I don't even know why I didn't think of a razor. I have all these tools and my best friend is a razor blade and I neglect it! Thank you for the answer to my quandary!!!!

I don't see any bad news here! I remember the day I decided to "dig a little deeper" into my truck and ended up with nothing but a frame and shell of a former truck Someone told me once that if you do it right, you'll only do it once. Of course he never mentioned the costs of doing it right Great build...looking forward to seeing the end result!

Glad to help out; I am usually asking for help, so it's nice to be able to offer some help.

Ummm... if the windshield is already cracked, there's always the sledge hammer method of removal... a bit more messy, but a hell of a lot more fun!

Re: Project: Jo, The other girlfriend.

Guess who got some more work done!! Took the windshield and back glass out. Found some nasty rust in the passenger side pillar on top. Nothing I cant handle though. There is also a little in the passenger side floor board (actually on the panel by the air vent down there).

Also got both doors off and on standby.

Looking at the rust spot I'm debating shaving the drip rails. Im not a master fabricator nor have I ever attempted something like that. I do fabricate gates and that kind of things for work but thats kind of a whole other concept. Im wondering if its something I can handle myself...
